Historia
It's 1546, and Scotland is under attack from Henry VIII, determined to marry his son to the infant Mary, Queen of Scots. A few among the Scottish lairds are eager for this alliance, too. They kill Cardinal Beaton, who is Mary’s great protector, and take St. Andrews Castle, expecting rescue any day from England. Local lad Will is among them, fighting for the Protestant cause. His treasonous activities place his family in grave danger, forcing his sister, Bethia, into an unwelcome alliance.

I gave up halfway through. While the Scots accent seemed authentic, it made it harder to understand & I wasn’t clear on who was who & why they were doing things. Might have been better read than listened to.

Historia
Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

Another great read by Grisham!

Really compelling story with interesting subplots. It’s easy to become immersed with the characters, both familiar and new.

Historia
From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Great legal mystery

I chose this book because a reviewer said it was similar to John Grisham. It definitely is, but with many twist & turns and likable characters.

Whiny narrator
Revisado: 09-07-22
The female narrator starts out bemoaning her reduced status at the beginning and doesn’t late up until the very predictable happy ending. I listened to the whole thing, but wouldn’t recommend it.

Poignant story with laughs
Revisado: 03-12-22
I found the narration with the accents really enhanced the story. I didn’t have trouble understanding, other than maybe a couple of words. This is a much better listen than it would be a read. One section was emotionally difficult, but the overall story is one of success.

This is abridged!
Revisado: 11-17-21
I didn’t realize this was an abridged version until the closing credits. One thing I enjoy about Audible books is having the original in complete form. Overall the story was good, but the narrator was not as good as others I’ve listened to.
