Historia
Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide.

One of the best stories about mental illness
Revisado: 03-20-25
I applaud the author for sharing her story of struggling with bipolar illness, and crafting a story that is sooooo captivating. This is the Gold Standard to which other books about mental illness (or any memoirs for that matter) should be compared.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Outstanding
Revisado: 01-19-25
This re-imagining of the Huck Finn story from the point of view of the slave Jim, presents a universal experience of the shocking discovery of the other person’s perspective. Mark Twain was a humorist. Percival Everett shows that what’s funny to one person might be degrading to another.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Fabulous
Revisado: 01-16-25
Incredible, and unusual story, filled with passion and heartbreak. Just purchased the book so I can read the words and wallow in the sentences. The audio version is especially wonderful, as it’s read by the author who is also a performer. Her inflections and voices are perfect. Might be too sexy for some, but I loved the whole book.

Historia
Come to Paris, August 2021, when the City of Lights was still empty of tourists and a thirst for long-overdue pleasure gripped those who wandered its streets. After New York City emptied out in March 2020, Glynnis MacNicol, aged forty-six, unmarried with no children, spent sixteen months alone in her tiny Manhattan apartment. The isolation was punishing. A year without touch. Women are warned of invisibility as they age, but this was an extreme loneliness no one can prepare you for. When the opportunity to sublet a friend’s apartment in Paris arose, MacNicol jumped on it.

Loved this book
Revisado: 11-22-24
The author presents a side of the human struggle, that opened my eyes. After the isolation of Covid, she took the bull by the horns and was able to connect with joy and tenderness. She helped me become more aware of the importance of human touch. At times I was worried about her safety, but she managed that successfully, although the spanking was a little unsettling.

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Maybe a perfect book
Revisado: 11-21-24
This story has all the features I love in a book. First and foremost, the author tells a great story - conflict and resolution. It’s also well written and sharply edited. There’s humor and the author is humble. Furthermore, the story gives me insight into my own struggles in life. No wonder they made this into a movie.

This should have been an article, not a book
Revisado: 11-21-24
This is not well written. The story of Maddy is sooooo unfortunate and sad. My heart aches for her. However, the author includes excessive information that does not add to the arch of the story. Furthermore, the author includes way too many documents - verbatim emails, text and letters. A good author would have summarized and distilled the documents into a meaningful story. My heart aches for Maddy, but not the writing.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Amazed at the good reviews?!?!?
Revisado: 11-01-24
I was looking forward to reading this book, but in the end increased the speed and couldn’t wait for it to finish. The author does not tell an compelling story. It seems that she just lists events - I did this, and then I did that . . over and over. It has all the excitement of reading a cookbook. (BTW: cooking plays a big role in the book.)
There are some interesting aspects - such as being raised by a mother born in Korea and a father born in the US - the struggle with being from two cultures, but over all, the book is bland.

For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

Non-fiction at its best.
Revisado: 10-05-24
Who needs fiction when you have stories like this? The author has done a lot of research and weaves it into a compelling, well edited story. I especially enjoyed trying to understand the main character. What a jerk!! The author puts it nicely in one chapter - What’s wrong with this guy??

I love this. It’s Sci Fi that reminds me of the marvelous stories I grew up with on Twilight Zone. The narration is well done. I’m looking forward to more from this author.
