Historia
The story begins when two poets meet. Gabriel Syme is a poet of law. Lucian Gregory is a poetic anarchist. As the poets protest their respective philosophies, they strike a challenge. In the ruckus that ensues, the Central European Council of Anarchists elects Syme to the post of Thursday, one of their seven chief council positions. Undercover. On the run, Syme meets with Sunday, the head of the council, a man so outrageously mysterious that his antics confound both the law-abiding and the anarchist.

Wait for the Ending!

Like 95% of the book felt a little silly and ridiculous to me… which in hindsight I think was part of the point… but the last 30 min of the book were wonderful. I am so glad I didn’t stop before the end!

Historia
After the notorious 'Middle Street Massacre' of 1951, when the majority of Brighton's criminals wiped one another out in a vicious battle as the local police force enjoyed a brief stop en route for an ice cream, Inspector Steine rather enjoys life as a policeman. No criminals, no crime, no stress. He just wishes Sergeant Brunswick would stop insisting that perhaps not every criminal was wiped out that fateful day. So it's really rather annoying when an ambitious - not to mention irritating - new Constable shows up to work and starts investigating a series of burglaries.

It was ok?
Revisado: 05-15-24
It was kind of silly? It made it difficult to enjoy even the humor because it moved into the ridiculous as far as plots go. There were some parts I really enjoyed but overall I just felt a lot of “I don’t care” which is never a good sign with a book. I can’t decide if I will read the next book in the series or not.

Great Narrator for Great Story
Revisado: 04-25-24
What a GREAT story - without spoilers, even if you aren’t a typical science fiction person I think you would enjoy this. There is a lot of science at times but I think it makes the story more authentic and feel more realistic

Historia
Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic—written in time for the 1843 holiday season—sold out its initial printing of 6,000 copies in one day. It remains Dickens’ most widely read and best-loved work, guaranteed to warm and uplift with the simplicity of its message and the depth of its honest truths. Bah! Humbug! It’s Christmas Eve and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is in a foul temper—good cheer and joyful spending turn his very insides to vinegar.

We listen to A Christmas Carol at least once each Christmas season. This is the best audiobook of the story we’ve found. None of the others even begin to compare. The narrator brings the story to life beautifully.

Historia
Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a tale of love and marriage told with irony and insight. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth have met and seperated years before. Their reunion, after the passage or irrecoverable years of their youth, forces a recognition of the false values that drove them apart.

I struggle with whether Persuasion or Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Austen. So, I read them both regularly! Ha! This is a great performance of persuasion. The narrator makes the story really come to life and does a good job of bringing out the sly humor in the story.

Great Article!
Revisado: 06-28-18
I was searching for Bill McDermott's book when I saw that he had written an article for the Harvard Business Review. I recently heard Bill McDermott speak, and he was so inspirational, that I just had to take the time to listen to this article. It was incredibly well-written, and even though he is referring to leading multinational businesses, I think the truths in his article can definitely be applied to much smaller organizations. There was plenty of food for thought in this article!

Considered the first full-length detective novel in the English language, T.S. Eliot described The Moonstone as 'the first and greatest English detective novel'. The stone of the title is an enormous yellow diamond plundered from an Indian shrine after the Siege of Seringapatam. Given to Miss Verinder on her 18th birthday, it mysteriously disappears that very night. Suspicion falls on three Indian jugglers who have been seen in the neighbourhood. Sergeant Cuff is assigned to the case....

Definitely a Classic
Revisado: 05-17-18
I had read this book a long time ago, but I wanted to re-read it after reading the Woman in White recently. First, the narrator was great! I thought he did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. There were times that I was giggling as Miss Clack or Betteredge were describing events. The story is a classic, so you should read it... especially if you are a fan of detective novels! However, the narrator definitely breathes life into the story. I was sucked in and couldn't wait to find out what happened next!

Wow (Not in a good way)
Revisado: 01-31-18
Well, to be honest about all I enjoyed about this story was the narrator. I could listen to Simon Vance narrate a book about types of gravel and enjoy listening to him.
This was poorly researched and poorly executed. I gave 2 stars because I appreciate the idea of attempting the 1700s as a time period, but that’s about it. I feel like when authors attempt “historical fiction” they tend to leave out the historical part. This could have literally taken place any time pre-1900 and the reader would be none the wiser. The modern turn of phrase prevents the reader from being immersed in 1781 truly. Additionally, if all of the silly similes and metaphors were removed I think this book would have been about 2 hours shorter. I was so disappointed after all the good reviews.
I was not disappointed in the narrator... he is always awesome!

Revisado: 07-26-17
My husband and I listened to this on a road trip. Jonathan Stroud has created a fascinating world and very great characters. Simon Jones is a phenomenal narrator. He really brought the characters to life, especially Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus is hilarious. To be honest, I would love a book that was just his opinions on everything. His character injects a lot of humor into the novel. I won't go over the plot again, because I'm sure another review has covered that. I will just say that as far as world-building goes, Jonathan Stroud did an incredible job. Even if fantasy isn't your typical genre, I would recommend giving this book a try! The writing is great, and the story is fun!
