Historia
Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

Great, Informative Listen!
Revisado: 01-04-24
This was a fascinating history told in a completely engaging way! Easy to follow, excellent narrator, and really interesting background to the roots & progression of some of the most common/recognizable drug classes we still have today.
Love that it includes historical context for the drug discoveries/development (ie. what was going on in the world, reasoning behind the need/popuarity of some of these items vs. others, which populations they most served, etc).
Will definitely re-listen in future to be sure I caught it all!

Classic Dick Francis!
Revisado: 01-22-23
One of my fave Francis novels, with his signature style of bringing to life a character with a unique/interesting background, tying them into the horse racing world, and concluding with a plot twist you never see coming!
Pretty good narration style.

Fascinating Perspective
Revisado: 05-31-21
I very much enjoyed listening to this new perspective on conflict, I've never heard anything quite like it! Although the character dialogue was a *little* idealistic (i.e. doubt it would go that smoothly in very difficult/charged situations) it was still helpful. I look forward to trying out the diagrams on some of my own current conflicts.

Great ideas and peek into another culture's set of parenting ideals, lots of food for thought. Narration wasn't quite "smooth", felt a little choppy/disconnected from time to time. Overall definitely will listen to again!

Historia
In Proof, Adam Rogers reveals alcohol as a miracle of science, going deep into the pleasures of making and drinking booze—and the effects of the latter. The people who make and sell alcohol may talk about history and tradition, but alcohol production is really powered by physics, molecular biology, organic chemistry, and a bit of metallurgy—and our taste for those products is a melding of psychology and neurobiology.

Excellent View of History AND Science!
Revisado: 04-26-21
I loved this book, it had fascinating history and in depth science explorations of all sorts of "booze" from all over the world. Told in an engaging manner and sprinkled with funny anecdotes, I will definitely listen again, especially to catch more understanding of some of the *technical* explanations that went a bit over my head in some places. Good narration, thoroughly enjoyable!

What he now faces at his cousin Donald's house is also art - the art of a perfectly brutal murderer. Classic Francis!
Revisado: 02-24-21
I very much enjoyed this performance of one of Dick Francis' classic books. The author always did such a great job of creating interesting (and very diverse!) main characters, with excellent believability in regards to their backgrounds, actions/reactions, speech, etc. - in this case, a professional artist.
The narrator did each of the many characters woven into this story justice as well, giving distinct, consistent performances of each one.
Great job all round!
