Historia
We're all getting older every day, and scientific research has shown that starting in our 20s, some brain functions begin a linear decline. But is old age all doom and gloom? Not at all! While it's true that some functions in the aging brain decline, neuroscientists have discovered that many other brain functions remain stable - or even improve - as we age.

Now I want to research things more in-depth..

...and that is always a good thing.
Clear presentation; chapter titles were good indicators of the topics.
Always, accounts of brain research intrigue me. Coincidentally, this morning I read a newspaper article explaining research findings of the effects of menopause (pre-, peri-, post) on the female brain which was not addressed in this course (not a criticism, merely an observation) but findings connected to points addressed in this course. I mention this to emphasize that some lectures in this course could be updated quite often due to ongoing research. Fascinating topic.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

For med. science and history buffs
Revisado: 01-25-21
I enjoyed this book immensely. I like the connections between, history, science and culture. Lister's maverick attitude, intelligence, perseverance, communication skills and integrity provide a model for today's scientists and inventors. I am not daunted by the down and dirty details of medical procedures. If the thought of pus, blood, amputations and other surgical realities make you queasy, this book is not for you.

Entertaining sci-fi
Revisado: 05-02-19
Clever tale incorporating technology, planetary exploration, anthropology, cultures, art of war, replicant logistics, negotiation, relationships. I got hooked within the first couple chapters. great performance by narrator ( though his pronunciation of Archimedes puzzled me). I listen at double sided and his words weren't muddled together.

Historia
Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

interesting character
Revisado: 04-09-19
I'm no psychologist but it was interesting to follow Eleanor's journey. This was a read for a book club and I didn't have high expectations. I really enjoyed it for the dialogue, Eleanor's honesty and bluntness, and that reality of how a random occurrence or chance meeting can set in motion an unexpected change in life and perspective. Haven't we all had at least one experience like that in real life. The question is, do we sit up and take notice. Eleanor's analytical approach to life means she can't help but take notice.
The voice work is captivating, but then I'm a sucker for Scottish accents.
I was expecting some of the outcomes and tangential journeys, but I was also surprised by some of the plot points.
I readily recommend this Audible selection even though I prefer non-fiction.

Historia
Catherine of Siena (1347 - 1380) is one of the most beloved saints of the Christian tradition. In this captivating course, you will explore her life, faith, and works under the guidance of Sr. Suzanne Noffke, OP, PhD, an internationally acclaimed expert on Catherine. One of 25 children of a Tuscan wool-dyer guildsman and his irascible wife, Catherine was unschooled and had a humble upbringing. Despite her lack of formal education, her mind was too sharp and her heart too honest to settle for a blind embrace of doctrine.

Unforgettable story but annoying recording
Revisado: 07-22-18
This was my introduction to Catherine Siena. She was a remarkable woman, based on all the letters and passages compiled here. She had some unique perspectives on faith and living for Christ.
The recording was full of repetitive phrases. I wondered if editors were asleep at the recording studio or if there is a glitch with the system. It was distracting. I expect better quality.

Riveting experience
Revisado: 04-11-18
I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of fiction/non-fiction. A book that inspires me to delve deeper into a topic is a treasure. On the whole, satisfying performance. Some of the actors' parts were spoken too fast for my liking (I consulted Kindle version to reread some of the parts rather than slow down the audio), and I don't think it was part of the character representation. I expect words to be pronounced correctly. Even one mispronunciation (popliteal - look it up for goodness sakes!) is annoyingly distracting.

Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, humanity was facing global disaster. Mass starvation, long predicted for the fast-growing population, was about to become a reality. A call went out to the worlds scientists to find a solution. This is the story of the two enormously gifted, fatally flawed men who found it: the brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and the reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, controlled world markets, and saved millions of lives.

I learned so much about both. I'm always intrigued learning about how things work and how mechanical problems are solved.... the evolution of technology. I wasn't keen on the narrator - his delivery was choppy.
