Historia
In her latest enchanting novel, New York Times best-selling author Sarah Addison Allen invites you to a quirky little Southern town with more magic than a full Carolina moon. Here two very different women discover how to find their place in the world - no matter how out of place they feel. Emily Benedict came to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother’s life. Such as, why did Dulcie Shelby leave her hometown so suddenly? And why did she vow never to return?

Spellbinding, as are all her novels.

Sarah Addison Allen is such a talented writer who writes lovely, spellbinding novels that I never want to end. This one, especially, I wanted to go on. Wonderful and magical. The narration was fantastic too.

Christian romance novel full of tropes.
Revisado: 02-03-25
Seems like it could have been written by AI. Old tropes, nothing creative. Female lead was annoyingly talkative, male lead just standard guy without much personality. Christian mentions sprinkled here and there, kind of awkwardly. I admit, I didn’t finish it. Just didn’t get any more interesting.

Childish main character, slow, sticky sweet.
Revisado: 11-09-24
Book based on a fairy tale put out by an LDS (Mormon) company, so that gives you an idea of the tone. The mystery was interesting, which is why I kept listening to it, despite it being kind of plodding. I like not having steamy descriptions but this feels like a four hour Hallmark movie with extra sap, described in tedious detail. More like a YA novel. Crying and pouting female lead always seems pretty childish and unsure of herself, relying on the older male to give her strength/confidence. For more exciting (and female empowered) fairy tale remakes, try The Four Kingdoms by Melanie Cellier.

Silly annoying main character
Revisado: 10-24-24
I couldn't stand the main character. She seems like a blundering teenager more than a grown woman. She hurts the people around her and then gets forgiven over and over. I got through the first book but had to quit the second when she started gaslighting the other characters for defending themselves against her thoughtlessness and meanness. Ugh. The narrator did a fine job and is probably the only reason I got through the first book.

Worst book I've listened to in a long time.
Revisado: 11-03-23
Horrid jerk for the male lead, disappointingly weak female main character. Male lead is wronged in a previous relationship so he mistreats a starry-eyed young woman and apparently feels justified in doing so. She seems spirited and intelligent at the beginning but then lets him mistreat her throughout the entire book. Perhaps I was in the wrong mindset when I listened, but I don't understand all the rave reviews. I understand having a domineering man, particularly in a period piece, but this was bordering on emotional abuse. I loved the Bridgerton series, but this is nothing like that. Couldn't finish and will think twice before choosing a Julia Quinn novel again.

Horrid, hateful characters
Revisado: 04-25-22
I can't believe this is a Sophie Kinsella book. I've slogged through it, hoping it will get better and it just keeps being awful. A young woman, used to being used and even abused (psychologically) by her family since childhood continues being used and abused throughout the book, all disguised as family loyalty and love. It could possibly be used for discussions of toxic family relationships, gaslighting, the psychology of abuse victims, etc., but if you want a light-hearted read, this isn't it. The usual lovable, quirky, funny Sophie Kinsella character(s) are missing, so there's barely a laugh throughout. So many good books out there, I'm sorry I wasted hours on this one. Try any other Sophie Kinsella book and it will be much, much better.

Too long & rarely funny
Revisado: 06-05-14
I got bored a lot with this story and only finished it because it was all I had on a long trip. I just didn't get that an immature whiny 29-year-old (e.g., she kept talking about finding "cute boys" and constantly complained about her life) was entertaining. Also, way too many details (how she folds her laundry, extended descriptions of bad dates). Cute premise but didn't spark.
