Historia
The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

Harrowing haunting raw
Revisado: 11-21-24
Terrifyingly haunting, chapter 13 adds horrifying nightmare quality to the already nightmare of combat that is this book. Narration is top notch, I wish they all were narrated this well.

Historia
Thousands of miles from friendly ports, the US Navy had finally managed to complete the capture of Guadalcanal from the Japanese in early 1943. Now the Allies sought to keep the offensive momentum won at such a high cost. This is the central plotline running through this page-turning history beginning with the Japanese Operation I-Go and the American ambush of Admiral Yamamoto and continuing on to the Allied invasion of New Georgia, northwest of Guadalcanal in the middle of the Solomon Islands and the location of a major Japanese base.

Bad snarky narration
Revisado: 11-18-24
Good book, dense with info, terrible distracting snarky narration. Better to have read the book but I purchased it so I stayed with it. Words written as pondering were turned to snark. Bad stuff

Historia
The "Devil Dogs" of King Company, Third Battalion, 5th Marines—part of the legendary 1st Marine Division—were among the first American soldiers to take the offensive in World World II—and also the last. They landed on the beaches of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in August 1942—the first US ground offensive of the war—and were present when Okinawa, Japan's, most southerly prefecture finally fell to American troops in June 1945. Ordinary men, the Devil Dogs were asked to do something extraordinary: take on the victorious Imperial Japanese Army—and defeat it.

Narration is among worst I've heard
Revisado: 11-02-24
I believe this was a good book, I'll have to read the actual book. I got through the audio book in spite of the terrible narration. if he stuck to his Australian accent it would have been fine. but he flipped between terrible inaccurate and poor Amercan accents. his southern accent made Sledge and all the others sound like idiot bumpkins rather than the smart men they were. Terrible narration. Really terrible and insulting to the men quoted

Historia
From the Japanese soldiers' carefully calculated - and ultimately foiled - attempt to build a series of impregnable island forts on the ground to the tireless efforts of the Americans who struggled against a tenacious adversary and the temperature and terrain of the island itself, Robert Leckie captures the loneliness, the agony, and the heat of 24-hour-a-day fighting on Guadalcanal.

book great, narrator terrible
Revisado: 09-21-24
Who found this idiot? He does imitations of Japanese narrative like an old racist 1940s movie, the book is great, well researched and of course from Leckie. where do they find this combination of terrible AI and bad bad actual readers. must be on the cheap. You'll have to overcome this idiot.

Historia
Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing, and trapping skills helped put food on his family's table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941.

Another great 1st hand account. Very alive
Revisado: 09-21-24
As usual for the most part the narration was not so great but not bad either. I wish they'd get some actors or interesting people who don't sound like AI or a movie stereotype teacher from an 1980s movie.
