Historia
A small town shopkeeper, a handsome stranger, and the local boy who secretly yearns for her. Sprinkle in a little magic and this typical love triangle explodes into an epic journey of hope, heartbreak, and healing that will leave you asking 'What is love'? Thea Irish hits it off with the new guy in town, Connor Love, her co-star in a community theater production of Romeo and Juliet, until she learns his reason for coming to her hometown could ruin her. She innocently turns to an old Irish tradition for help, but it's more of a curse than a cure. It takes control of her emotions and those of...

An enjoyable story
Revisado: 04-17-25
The story was engaging. A small town romance with an Irish twist. It was very Hallmarkesque, and yet not saccharine, and enough twists to make the tropes not get in the way of the story or make it too predictable.
The AI reader was very distracting. Many place names and a few regular words were mispronounced, and the phrasing and pacing were off. It would have been better with any live reader.

well written
Revisado: 04-16-23
This was an enjoyable listen. There was nothing implausible. The characters were well written and the story moved along with the right amount of detail and action. Though the 80s references were ubiquitous, it was intended so, and they were not the "draw" for the book.

Historia
England, 1585. In Kit Marlowe's last year at Cambridge, he is approached by Queen Elizabeth's spymaster offering an unorthodox career opportunity: going undercover to intercept a Catholic plot to put Mary, Queen of Scots on Elizabeth's throne. Spying on Queen Mary turns out to be more than Kit bargained for, but his salary allows him to mount his first play, and over the following years he becomes the toast of London's raucous theater scene.

I found this book an engaging read. The characters were realistic, The story was compelling enough that it made me look up more about Christopher Marlow because I wanted to know more.

Historia
In Shoutin’ in the Fire, Danté Stewart gives breathtaking language to his reckoning with the legacy of white supremacy - both the kind that hangs over our country and the kind that is internalized on a molecular level. Stewart uses his personal experiences as a vehicle to reclaim and reimagine spiritual virtues like rage, resilience, and remembrance - and explores how these virtues might function as a work of love against an unjust, unloving world.

So many takeaways from this book I don't even know where to start. The book is fire. Part biography, part sermon, part celebration of Black lives and souls.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Nothing new

It seemed quite similar to other slave stories I have read. Phoebe being the wife of a jailer was a twist, but it all seemed very similar still.

Historia
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He "preached men into the Civil War", then, at age 50, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle.

Deep subtext - best read in an immersive way
Revisado: 01-12-22
Admittedly I broke this book up into chunks many days removed from each other, but even so I have done that with other books and not had a hard time tracking. I think it is a story best immersed in a short period of time to get the full impact ot the book. I think it was well written and the characters were good, but something about the way it was presented made me miss a lot of the deeper subtext without havibg had the benefit of the immersion factor. I have considered rereading it because of this.

Historia
Shalom is what God declared. Shalom is what the Kingdom of God looks like. Shalom is when all people have enough. It's when churches, schools, and public policies protect human dignity. Shalom is when the image of God is recognized in every single human. Shalom is our calling as followers of Jesus' gospel. What can we do to bring shalom to our nations, our communities, and our souls? Through a careful exploration of biblical text, particularly the first three chapters of Genesis, Lisa Sharon Harper shows us what "very good" can look like today, even after the Fall.

This book spoke to my soul.
Revisado: 03-25-21
If ever you thought you understood what Christianity was, this book will give you a new perspective. The Very Good Gospel ties so many threads together throughout the Bible. Things that seemed random before now make sense to me. I always struggled with how the gospel of "keeping me out of hell" was compelling. Now I get how the gospel of resounding love and connection is overwhelmingly compelling. This is a must read for Christians and non-Christians alike.

Historia
Mitza Maric has always been a little different from other girls. Most 20-year-olds are wives by now, not studying physics at an elite Zurich university with only male students trying to outdo her clever calculations. But Mitza is smart enough to know that, for her, math is an easier path than marriage. And then fellow student Albert Einstein takes an interest in her, and the world turns sideways. Theirs becomes a partnership of the mind and of the heart, but there might not be room for more than one genius in a marriage.

Well written, and a great story about the marginalization of smart women. A few times I felt the accent missed in the audio book.
