Historia
Only days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tapped Chester W. Nimitz to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. Nimitz transformed the devastated and dispirited Pacific fleet into the most powerful and commanding naval force in history. Facing demands from Washington to mount an early offensive, he had first to revive the depressed morale of the thousands of sailors, soldiers, and Marines who served under him. And of course, he also confronted a formidable and implacable enemy in the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Another Excellent Book from Craig Symonds
Revisado: 07-17-22
Craig Symonds is the best history writer I have read, no exceptions.
General Hagee CEO of the Nimitz Foundation, which manages the National Museum of the Pacific War, once told me that Craig will write and rewrite a sentence or paragraph several times until he feels it is acceptable. This obvious in his writing.
This book rivals my other favorite of his works, “Midway.”
I will recommend any of his books to anyone interested in WWII, the cival war, or naval history.

Historia
The Submarine Lifeguard League was formed toward the end of World War II in order to rescue downed Allied pilots. The League helped to save the lives of hundreds of Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps pilots from the Japanese as well as from death at sea. The author provides a riveting narrative of the adventures of this subdivision of the US Naval Fleet. From being killers, the US submarines changed into lifesavers in the last two years of the war. The author, Vice-Admiral Charles Lockwood (1890-1967) was the legendary commander of the US submarine fleet in the Pacific.

Excellent book!
Revisado: 10-30-20
Some recommendations for the narrator. Proper pronunciation of common names and references will make the book much more pleasant for the listener.
2 examples would be: Halsey is pronounced like “Hall-z” not “Hal-c.” The second is a particularly offensive recurrence in the narration of this book. Submariner should NEVER be pronounced “sub-mariner” as this would indicate a below par mariner, or sailor. The proper, really only way, to refer to these brave men who risked, and often lost, their lives for our country is “submarine-er.”
This is very important and should be noted for all future productions of books refering to submarines.

World War II at Sea offers a global perspective, focusing on the major engagements and personalities and revealing both their scale and their interconnection: the U-boat attack on Scapa Flow and the Battle of the Atlantic; the "miracle" evacuation from Dunkirk and the pitched battles for control of Norway fjords; Mussolini's Regia Marina - at the start of the war the fourth-largest navy in the world - and the dominance of the Kidö Butai and Japanese naval power in the Pacific; Pearl Harbor then Midway; and much more.

Another excellent book by Craig Symonds
Revisado: 09-06-20
I was once told by General Mike Hagee that, “Craig puts a lot of thought into every sentence he writes.” He went on to say that Dr. Symonds often rewites to say exactly what he wants to say and be as clear as possible.
It is obvious from this book as well as from his others that this is true.
Dr. Symonds is not only an expert historian he is also a great writer.
This book is one of best, and I will recommend it to all my friends who share an interest in history.
BTW: My favorite is “The Battle of Midway.”

Decision at Sea is a powerful and illuminating look at pivotal moments in the history of the Navy and of the United States. It is also a compelling study of the unchanging demands of leadership at sea, where commanders must make rapid decisions in the heat of battle with lives - and the fate of nations - hanging in the balance.

Everything Craig Symonds writes is great!

General Hagee once told me that “Craig puts a great amount of thought and effort into every sentence he writes.”
I know this is true. It is obvious when you read his work.
I believe that I would have loved to be one of his students. I think he is the kind of history professor that could make you consider changing you major to history.
Authors like Dr. Symonds are why I enjoy history so much.
I would also recommend listening to him speak if you ever get the chance.
This book was great.

Abraham Lincoln began his presidency admitting that he knew "but little of ships," but he quickly came to preside over the largest national armada to that time, not eclipsed until World War I. Naval historian Craig L. Symonds' Lincoln and His Admirals unveils an aspect of Lincoln's presidency unexamined by historians until now, revealing how he managed the men who ran the naval side of the Civil War, and how the activities of the Union Navy ultimately affected the course of history.

Revisado: 09-19-18
It is obvious that when Dr Symonds writes, he carefully considers every word to make sure his message is clear and understandable, even to a history novice like me.
This is a great book. I hope everyone who is interested in the navy, civil war or Lincoln will read this book.
I encourage Tantor, Recorded Books and Audible to produce all of Dr Symonds books.

Seventy years ago, more than 6000 Allied ships carried more than a million soldiers across the English Channel to a 50-mile-wide strip of the Normandy coast in German-occupied France. It was the greatest sea-borne assault in human history. The code names given to the beaches where the ships landed the soldiers have become immortal: Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and especially Omaha, the scene of almost unimaginable human tragedy.

This is a gripping adventure chock-full of "you-are-there" moments. Fluckey has drawn on logs, reports, letters, interviews, and a recently discovered illegal diary kept by one of his torpedomen.

Action, Excitement, & History. A great read!
Revisado: 09-28-13
Great read!! Fluckey did a great job putting you right in the action. Those who were there are the best at this. The book doesn't just tell you what happened, it lets you experince it first hand. You also get to know the men on the boat. I feel like I have a bunch of new friends. This book would be great for anyone interest in action, excitement, and history.
The production of the Audible portion was one of the best I have ever heard. The reader even pronounces the word " submariner" correctly. If you have ever spoken to an old submarine man he will be quick to tell you it's "submarine-er" not "sub-mariner."
This one of several titles that have needed to be on Audible for a long time. If everybody buys this title then maybe Audible will add other tiltes like: Richard Kane's "Wahoo" and "Clear the Bridge," and Edward L. Beech's, "Run Silent Run Deep," "Dust on the Sea," "Cold as the Sea," and "Submarine."
I want more!

I tried to love it
Revisado: 09-01-11
Well, I'll start by saying that Scott Brick is an excellent narrator and I purchased this book after listening to a video interview he did about it. The book definitely introduces some interesting ideas into the world of sf. If you are looking for something unique this book may be what you are looking for. That being said, I found the book extremely hard to listen to, I didn't care about the characters, I found the main character's side kick extremely one dimensional and annoying. The story never really seems to go anywhere. In most fiction the flow moves toward an exciting conflict in this book I felt like I was being lead around with a blind fold and when we finally got where we were going it was very anticlimactic. I also had a really hard time following what the heck was going on in the book, that is probably why I didn't like the characters and such. Normally I really enjoy a book that drops me into a world and lets me figure it out on my own but in this case it got way to deep way too fast, nothing ever seemed to be explained. Anyways, that's my opinion don't let me dissuade you from trying it.

Contrived transparency
Revisado: 11-18-07
I will start off by saying, if you have a few hours for a good exciting read… Buy it! That said, having read these authors other work I am amazed at the magnitude of transparency between the real Jack Coughlin (Mastery Gunny SGT/ Marine Scout Sniper ) and the main heroin. At some points you can’t help but shake your head and sigh, this book is like a fanciful overlay for Jack Coughlin’s book “Shooter” a historical account of his experiences in Iraq. If you are looking for a book about war, snipers, marines, ext I would highly recommend Shooter the authors other book however, this book is excellent!
