Like all Ken Follet books, this was riveting from page 1. The story takes place in England just before the 22 years war with France, ending with the battle of Waterloo. I gave performance only 4 stars because the narrator’s enunciation was such that I could not make out the last word of numerous sentences, even after playing them several times. His voice just fades out to nothing.

A bit sappy and predictable. I kept rolling my eyes while I listened to it.

I enjoyed the premise of the book and the physics in it. Some of the narrator goofs drove me batty, however. The big one was when the characters were talking about causal loops and the narrator pronounced them as "casual" loops. Who edits these things? And I thought everyone would have heard of Richard Feynman and thus would not pronounce his name as "Fenneman". Ugh. The story was fun, though and kept my interest enough to want to read other Benford novels. Hopefully the narrators will be different.

I highly recommend all three books in the Moon Base Delta Series. The author keeps it scientifically realistic and exciting at the same time. I learned a lot about space physics listening to the books. I've now devoured all of his books: this series, the Mars series, and the Belt series. All are good reads, but the Moon Base Delta Series is the best.

I never cared for the Cheney family before, but after reading this I have so much admiration for Liz Cheney’s intelligence, her honor, and her courage. Every American should read this book.

This wasn’t the best Emily St. John Mandel novel, but it was still captivating. I like her character development and their continual interactions with one another. I disagree with other reviewers that nothing happens. I detested the reader however and found myself grimacing and rolling my eyes throughout the book because of her voicing and her continual mispronunciation of “et cetera” (she said “excetra”). It was like having an adolescent girl read the book to you. Ugh.

I couldn’t put this book down. The readers were excellent and the story held just enough weirdness but also normality to keep me hooked. I predict a Emily St. John Mandel book binge in my future.

I couldn’t make it through this book. The characters are silly. The reader uses British voices so it sounds like a bunch of cartoonish characters stepped out of Piccadilly Circus and into a space opera. To the person complaining about the pronunciation of “hegemony”- the narrator is British and using the British pronunciation. I’ll be thinking twice before I buy any more Adrian Tschaikovsky books.

Fabulous Tale of Appalachia

This is probably my favorite Barbara Kingsolver book so far. She weaves a compassionate - and yes often depressing —tale of the opioid crisis and its effect on the people of Appalachia, told through the life of a boy born at the dawn of the crisis. The protagonist is a smart, funny, and sympathetic character, which made it easy for me to care about him and difficult for me to put down the book. Sometimes I wanted to slap him up side of the head because of stupid decisions he made. Often I chuckled at his ironic observations of people. The history of the descent of Appalachia into poverty and crisis is told largely through the words of one is his teachers and a well- read friend. I really admire Kingsolver for tackling this story and making it into such a compelling tale. I highly recommend it.

This was a captivating book on Nancy Pelosi. I’d read another one last year, but this was by far the best. I liked the reader as well. I highly recommend it.
