I couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 06-17-15
Would you try another book from Susan Meissner and/or Tavia Gilbert?
NO! Tavia Gilbert's quivering voice was maddening and I couldn't listen to it. I didn't finish the book. The story was soap operaish and contrived.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something intelligent.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's voice shook with phony emotion and she attempted accents that were beyond her capability. As a result, the narration was both silly and grating.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story had possibilities. Perhaps if it was better narrated I would have enjoyed it more, as the book had been recommended to me by someone whose reading tastes I respect.
Any additional comments?
It would be better for a narrator to NOT ATTEMPT a foreign accent than to do one badly.

Historia
Scientology, created in 1954 by a prolific sci-fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard, claims to be the world's fastest-growing religion, with millions of members around the world and huge financial holdings. Its celebrity believers keep its profile high, and its teams of "volunteer ministers" offer aid at disaster sites such as Haiti and the World Trade Center. But Scientology is also a notably closed faith, harassing journalists and others through litigation and intimidation, even infiltrating the highest levels of government to further its goals.

Don't listen while driving
Revisado: 04-30-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I wouldn't recommend this audio book to anyone; the narration made a boring text even worse.
Has Inside Scientology turned you off from other books in this genre?
Perhaps. I would very carefully read reviews before I would purchase a similar book. I would especially avaoid this narrator.
Would you be willing to try another one of Stephen Hoye’s performances?
No.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was disappointed, as I was looking forward to learning more about Scientology. However, I could not maintain my interest in this selection.

A Quietly Beautiful Story
Revisado: 11-07-14
What did you love best about The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy?
This book brought me to a special place; a quiet hospice where people learn to live before they die. Queenie Hennessy, the woman many readers will have previously encountered as the woman Harold Fry sets out to visit on his walk across England, tells the story of their relationship from her perspective. She is a beautiful, realistic character who tells her story as she awaits the visit of the man she has quietly loved for most of her life.
What did you like best about this story?
The story is a parallel companion to that of Harold Fry's. The author notes specifically that it is neither a sequel nor a prequel. And she is right. I honestly did not want this tale to end. There were many times I waited in my car when I got to my destination just to hear a bit more. The writing was lovely and the narrator's voice clearly differentiated between the various characters and time frames. It is one of my all time favorite audible books.

Don't bother
Revisado: 08-26-14
What disappointed you about The Rosie Project?
This was a trite and boring story. We get it... the protagonist is on the spectrum. However, the story itself was repetitive and rather insulting. Yes, he had Asburgers, but he wasn't stupid.
Has The Rosie Project turned you off from other books in this genre?
Possibly.
What does Dan O'Grady bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Good voice, good accent.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No.
Any additional comments?
I hated this book, but listened to all of it anyway, since I was on a long car trip.

Historia
The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Rich in Hawaiian history, this novel proves itself a stellar piece of historical fiction.

Good story, but...
Revisado: 10-09-12
What did you like best about Moloka’i? What did you like least?
The story was interesting; a young Hawaiian girl contracts leprosy and is removed from her home to live amongst other lepers. The writing, however, was at times, very awkward and unsophisticated. It was an okay book, but it certainly wasn't one that I couldn't wait to get back to.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
At times the narrator's voice bothered me; her accent was sort of a stereotypical tough Asian girl that I found rather condescending.
Do you think Moloka’i needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. This one was enough.

Too sad
Revisado: 02-03-11
This is probably a very good book, but I could not get beyond the first few chapters. If you are a dog lover, it is painful to listen to; the first part I was able to deal with, even though it made me cry. However, during the second section, when a kid who tortures animals gets the puppy into his room, I decided that I could give myself permission to stop listening. It was just too anxiety producing for me.
