Historia
Timothy Snyder has been called “the leading interpreter of our dark times.” As a historian, he has given us startling reinterpretations of political collapse and mass killing. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we’re fighting for.

Thank you Timothy Snyder

A brilliant and critical dissection if “freedom”. I am recommending it to many people. Because it was published in 2023, I wonder the internal response to this recent election.

Historia
North Korea is an open-air prison from which there is no escape. Only a handful of men and women have succeeded. Jihyun Park is one of these rare survivors. Twice she left the land of the ‘socialist miracle’ to flee famine and dictatorship. By the age of 29, she had already witnessed a lifetime of suffering. Family members had died of starvation; her brother was beaten nearly to death by soldiers. Even smiling and laughing was discouraged.

Transformative
Revisado: 04-25-23
I am well onto my senior years and crave personal narratives from individuals who embrace life on the deepest of levels. The Hard Road Out, for as dark and hopeless it’s reality, is the greatest of testaments.

Historia
In the wake of an unimportant battle between two long-forgotten kingdoms in fourteenth-century southern India, a nine-year-old girl has a divine encounter that will change the course of history. After witnessing the death of her mother, the grief-stricken Pampa Kampana becomes a vessel for a goddess, who begins to speak out of the girl’s mouth. Granting her powers beyond Pampa Kampana’s comprehension, the goddess tells her that she will be instrumental in the rise of a great city called Bisnaga—“victory city”—the wonder of the world.

Prophetic and sadly familiar
Revisado: 04-13-23
I personally am not good at remembering the names of characters, but grasp easily story. Victory city, with invested hopes for peace, justice, love as its greatest rule of law, regretfully follows the best and worst in humanity. But the juxtaposition of victory and regret meat it does tell a beautiful story of humanity, too.

Historia
Born to interracial American parents in Sweden, Jason Diakité grew up between worlds - part Swedish, American, black, white, Cherokee, Slovak, and German, riding a delicate cultural and racial divide. It was a no-man’s-land that left him in constant search of self. Even after his hip-hop career took off, Jason fought to unify a complex system of family roots that branched across continents, ethnicities, classes, colors, and eras to find a sense of belonging.
