The use of two narrators was not necessary and extremely confusing. Two voices for same characters? Why? Oh, right maybe to be politically correct. Gotta have both, male and female, right? Wrong, just pick one. I kept saying to myself, ‘this is so annoying’ when trying to figure out who was who. Oh that’s her voice doing the male president. Oh, now that his voice doing the male president. I didn’t enjoy having to work that out with every single character. I didn’t even like any of the characters. They certainly did not warrant two narrators giving them each a voice.

Typical Leadership Book. Nothing New Here

Typical leadership book. Disney’s Bob Igor led an interesting life. Although he says the book’s not a memoir, it is. At times I felt although he was talented and ambitious, (and there is little doubt that he was ambitious), it seemed as though a key role in his success was that he was always in the right place at the right time. He also
acquired most of his leadership roles during an especially all white, all male dominated media culture. Some people compare this book to
Shoe Dog. I read Shoe Dog and that book was more like ‘a ride of a lifetime’ than this book was . It’s a typical leadership book with a well known character. Nothing new here.

Who knew that Phil Knight could write better than most professional “authors”! A warm, lighthearted , often funny memoir that tells a fascinating tale of the birth of Nike. Absolutely loved it!

Any additional comments?

If spending your next precious reading time locked into a setting with over zealous utopian-istas who are also narcissistic twenty-something year olds (who you could't stand in high school or college) with unchecked power, and if you have no idea where that could lead, then by all means read the book. If you do have an idea where today's social media's smiley face and frowny face insistence on total transparency 'could' lead, your right; this book will be predicable, not a page turner, and will most likely make you sick to your stomach. If you've never read Orwell's 1984, or Atlas Shrugged, then this might be a book for you, although the characters in the Circle lack the quality and depth some of the characters had in the latter two. The dialogue in the circle is often repetitive and quite boring. Here are a few mantras the Circlers live by, and impose on others: 'Sharing is Caring', 'A Secret is a Lie', 'Privacy is Theft'.
They seem innocent enough right? I mean, at least to a five year old. There is a lot of five year old preachiness in this book.
George Carlin was once quoted in an interview. He said, "When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts. Smiley-smiley Fascism--Germany lost the Second World War. Fascism won't. Believe me, my friend". Let's hope he wrong.

Courtenay is a Master Storyteller!

Any additional comments?

Sometimes you come across a gifted writer. Sometimes you come across a gifted storyteller. When you come across both of these attributes in one person, then you have a legend. I am just sorry that I was introduced to Courtenay by way of his obituary. The Power of One was his first book; one of many that I will read.
A bright young boy sent off to boarding school at the age of 5, after the death of his father {and his mother subsequently committed to a "nervous breakdown" institution}, has to find his way in a very socially complicated and racially divided society. He soon discovers his dream is to become a champion boxer, but only after first conquering many humiliations and fears. The bullies that nearly break him in boarding school leave open an emotional sore, which is soon mended by people who, by happenstance, enter his life and become integral forces in giving birth to a tenacious champion of both body and soul. I am listening to this book rather than reading it. The narrator, Humphrey Bower, does an outstanding portrayal of every character in the book. I highly recommend the audible, if you want to be truly entertained.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is the 2nd part of Ken Follet's Century Trilogy and I recommend reading The Fall of Giants before Winter of the World. Follet is a masterful historic fiction writer. He fully researches the time period for the story's background and creatively weaves his characters in and out of real events. If you like history, then you'll love his epic sagas. Although, you cannot have a weak stomach. It was a horrendous time in history, but people still had to go on living their lives. His characters can be viciously cruel as they are passionately intriguing. He spares nothing when telling a story. As much as he'll have you turning pages quicker than speed reader Evelyn Wood, he'll also have you wanting to slam a fist through a wall into one if the character's head. His books have a tendency to elicit a wide range of emotion, but they are addicting! Narrator John Lee is well cast and a fantastic reader. Can't wait for the last part!

Any additional comments?

Jess Walter's rocks this book with his passion for storytelling. The novellas within the novel were delightfully engaging as each character is deftly defined and linked to others, making the story all the more endearing! And, Edoardo Ballerini's narration and character performance is stella!

Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I really like his performances, his American accent needs work though.

What was most disappointing about Beatriz Williams’s story?

The protagonist was annoyingly naive and rather adolescent. Her beau or Prince Charming was unrealistically perfect and often too predictable.

What about January LaVoy’s performance did you like?

I liked her.

Any additional comments?

Recommended for anyone whose head is in the clouds.
