Seriously?
Revisado: 03-11-25
I can't believe how highly this book is rated vs. how bad it actually is.
Calling these characters stick figure representations of human beings is giving stick figure characters a bad name.
We are told exactly what a character is thinking then they give one sentence of dialogue for exposition sake and we are off to more commentary on their thinking again. Seriously whole chapters can have a single line of dialogue and that dialogue is just a repeat of the character's inner monologue.
There's an old saying in the writing world that says "show don't tell".... this book tells when it even bothers to take 10 seconds for a line of showing.
WOW, is this book bad. If you are accustomed to reading anything more complicated than the directions of a microwave dinner you should steer clear of this mess.
I am off to see how to get a refund.

I just stumbled on this title out of the blue and I am really glad I did.
Based on the ending I assume this is going to be a series, I am all in.

I just can't with this lead character! ugggg
Revisado: 02-22-25
WOW, I wish I could find a way to express just how much I HATE this lead character. He is an arrogant, smug, confrontational ahole of the highest order.
He is extremely condescending. Even when he doesn't say it out loud, his inner monologue is dripping with contempt for just about everyone else in the book.
The story is okay even if it's full of just about every trope under the sun. But this lead character is insufferable.
He goes out of his way to be disagreeable at every turn. leaders should lead, they don't have to be nice about it, but a good leader shouldn't hold their team in such low regard. You earn respect by showing it to others not by forcing your will on them.
The lead character's need to diminish, berate and belittle everyone around him he views to be of lower quality is extremely off-putting.
If the author did this intentionally to show character growth over time I would love it, but that's not what this is... no, the author seems to believe that this domineering behavior is not just acceptable, it's a positive trait. news flash, it isn't.
I am almost finished with the second book in the series, not sure if I am going to keep going.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

The most common investing approach today - one that values “growth” over all else - can be ineffective and counterproductive for many investors, not to mention needlessly stressful. Now, one of Seeking Alpha's most popular writers, Steven Bavaria, provides a groundbreaking alternative that will see you through all markets - up, down, and sideways. The Income Factory shows how to build an income stream that increases solidly and consistently - a result of reinvesting and compounding the dividends.

Revisado: 10-15-24
I suppose the ideas are good, but I am 6 chapters in and I have heard the same three points over and over again... really hard to listen to because it's frustrating/boring the hell out of me.
I hope there's some actionable advice here someplace because so far this could be one chapter of actual information.

maybe I'm reading a different book than everyone else?
Revisado: 09-28-24
I don't understand why people are giving this book such high marks.
it's laughably unbelievable with villains that are cardboard cutouts of every book, movie or TV show trope imaginable.
Obviously the narration is excellent, but as far as the book itself goes I couldn't get past the first few chapters. It's comically unbelievable at almost every turn and so unbelievable that I simply can't listen any longer.

Historia
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

Historia
The Light Brigade: it’s what soldiers fighting the war against Mars call the ones who come back...different. Grunts in the corporate corps get busted down into light to travel to and from interplanetary battlefronts. Everyone is changed by what the corps must do in order to break them down into light. Those who survive learn to stick to the mission brief - no matter what actually happens during combat. Dietz, a fresh recruit in the infantry, begins to experience combat drops that don’t sync up with the platoon’s.

Every now and again...
Revisado: 06-05-24
I read a lot of science fiction. well I should say I listen to a lot of science fiction.
I mean a lot..
So much so that I've actually run out of all the highly rated books on Audible that everyone says you should read and I now end up randomly searching for science fiction books through a haze of mediocrity.
I hate investing time into a book only to find out that it's not for me. so I tend to look for books with reviews so I can get a feel for what the book is like and I find myself avoiding books with not very many reviews.
However lately I've started reading more books with very low reviews just because I don't have a lot of options and even books with higher number of review counts I've been finding aren't always my cup of tea anyway .
I've listened to a lot of substandard stories over the last how many every years I've been on audible and frankly it can get very frustrating.
But every once in awhile I run across a gem, an absolute masterful book that reminds me again of why I love science fiction so much.
You see it's not about goofy aliens and unbelievable premises. It's not about heroes saving the day or the perfect starship captain that makes a book interesting to me.
What makes a book interesting to me is when the author gives me something to think about and makes me want to learn more about the world we inhabit.
This book did exactly that. What a fantastic novel! I'm absolutely floored at the emotional impact and the message buried in the pages of this book. this book. Unlike many others on audible, this should have thousands of positive reviews.
The best I can do is to provide one more review along the way to it's eventual highly acclaimed success that I think it will have.
What an excellent story. I strongly recommend reading this book and internalizing the lesson that it has for us as a society.
