Historia
1873: When the ambitious Doctor Paul Clément takes a job on the island of Saint Sébastien, he has dreams of finding cures for tropical diseases. After witnessing the ritualistic murder of a young boy who was allegedly already dead, he is warned never to speak of what he has seen. Back in fin de siècle Paris, Paul's attention turns to studying the nervous system and resuscitation through electricity. Paul is told of patients who apparently died and were brought back to life, claiming to have witnessed what they believed to be Heaven while they lay between life and death.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gothic tale. It is beautifully crafted and elegantly written. I look forward to finding my way through Mr Tallis’ other novels. I also loved the so-called “Vienna Blood” novels.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

We play many parts in our lives
Revisado: 05-27-24
An important theme, one of many, in this novel is persona. I mean this in the Roman sense of a theatrical mask. Each player is required to wear different masks a Roman play and In James the players, especially James, must become quick-change artists, and wear two, three and more masks simultaneously. The virtuosity displayed is breathtaking. Another important theme is the power of words. But it is not only the words that have the power, they also confer power upon those who are able to use them. This is especially true about names and especially the possibility to grant and use them. Finally, it seems to me that James would be an ideal work to pair with Huckleberry Finn in a class room. It is both a superb novel in its own right, but also a wonderful tool to help students understand the strengths and weaknesses of Twain’s classic.

Historia
The plague raging through London in 1665 has emptied the city. The only people left are those too poor to flee or those who selflessly struggle to control the contagion and safeguard the capital's future. Amongst them, though, are those prepared to risk their health for money - those who sell dubious 'cures' and hawk food at wildly inflated prices. Also amongst them are those who hold in their hands the future of the city's most iconic building - St Paul's Cathedral.

Engaging Story Well Told

Gregory’s novels are always a delight. They are well researched, providing insight for the modern reader into the periods they cover. They are well paced. They are also beautifully read. It takes a fine actor to bring a novel to life, these are lively indeed.

Wonderful
Revisado: 02-22-24
I had been unsure whether I wanted to risk disappointment that the creator of the Brunetti series might not succeed at nonfiction. How wrong! This was an absolute delight. And it was beautifully read. I recently listened to 3 terrific books about JS Bach containing a lot of German, Italian and French text, most of which was nearly unintelligible. Not in this book! The Italian bits were all clear and easy to understand.

Historia
The life of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), ruler of Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and much of Italy and Central and South America, has long intrigued biographers. But the elusive nature of the man (despite an abundance of documentation), his relentless travel and the control of his own image, together with the complexity of governing the world's first transatlantic empire, complicate the task.

London: The Biography is the pinnacle of Peter Ackroyd's brilliant obsession with the eponymous city. In this unusual and engaging work, Ackroyd brings the listener through time into the city whose institutions and idiosyncrasies have permeated much of his works of fiction and nonfiction. Peter Ackroyd sees London as a living, breathing organism, with its own laws of growth and change.

Great book
Revisado: 06-17-22
I rarely take the time to read a book twice, but Ackroyd’s London, his biography of Shakespeare and his Venice are exceptions. I’ll probably return for a third time. He manages to pack staggering amounts of fascinating material on every page but he does it with elegant style. I would
