Historia
A tenacious Maori detective, Hana Westerman juggles single motherhood, endemic prejudice, and the pressures of her career in Auckland CIB. Led to a crime scene by a mysterious video, she discovers a man ritualistically hanging in a secret room and a puzzling inward-curving inscription. Delving into the investigation after a second, apparently unrelated, death, she uncovers a chilling connection to an historic crime: 160 years before, during the brutal and bloody British colonization of New Zealand, a troop of colonial soldiers unjustly executed a Maori Chief.

Excellent story by a new author
Revisado: 02-01-24
Introduction for me to history of New Zealand woven into the fiction of a riveting murder mystery told by those who have the ability to speak the Māori language. This is an excellent start for this new author and I hope he continues to write more stories of New Zealand in this vein. A series would be great!

Historia
For nearly four decades, David Sedaris has faithfully kept a diary in which he records his thoughts and observations on the odd and funny events he witnesses. Anyone who has attended a live Sedaris event knows that his diary readings are often among the most joyful parts of the evening. But never before have they been available in print. Now, in Theft by Finding, Sedaris brings us his favorite entries. From deeply poignant to laugh-out-loud funny, these selections reveal with new intimacy a man longtime fans only think they know.

Terrible
Revisado: 04-30-18
What would have made Theft by Finding better?
Not what I expected. Have read several of his books before and find I am enjoying less and less each time. He seems to be a “one trick pony” with the same type of personal recollections repeated in a slightly different way. Commentary on social observations is one thing but this was simply a sad commentary in diary format.
This book was horrendous from the start. It was voyeourism for the ears. Will probably not be getting another personal diary book from this author.
Would you be willing to try another one of David Sedaris’s performances?
No.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Theft by Finding?
All.
