Historia
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

I liked the writing and the clever interweaving of one of the characters. Lightweight on the sci-fi, but the story was interesting anyway.

A oddly convoluted story told at a very leisurely pace
Revisado: 08-22-22
As usual, I enjoyed the character-driven mystery. This one I could follow a bit better than some of the others—I could keep up with the characters.
Also, I always enjoy Melrose and Vivian, Melrose’s butler and, of course, Richard Jury.
The background storylines and decorations where laid on a bit thick, but I enjoyed the escape nevertheless.

Historia
Igniting a long-overdue dialogue about how the legacy of racial injustice and white supremacy plays out in society at large and Buddhist communities in particular, this urgent call to action outlines a new dharma that takes into account the ways that racism and privilege prevent our collective awakening. In a society where profit rules, people's value is determined by the color of their skin, and many voices - including queer voices - are silenced, Radical Dharma recasts the concepts of engaged spirituality, social transformation, inclusiveness, and healing.

This kind of book is best read visually

There were pieces that moved me, things I would have liked to have highlighted to remember. Some of the topics went above my head—perhaps more philosophy than I can absorb via auditory mode. This wasn’t a how to book. Perhaps more a call to action. A call to pay attention to one’s own inner workings. A call to question oneself as well. And to consider rethinking common notions of our binary, white patriarchal capitalist culture.

A delightful sci-fi escape
Revisado: 05-15-21
A character-driven story that was very careful to display humanness, empathy, and inclusion along with the adventure.
There were some slow spots, and I figure this first book was doing a bit of world-building and introducing the motley crew.
Overall, I appreciated it and the author’s mission to show a universe with its usual flaws that include greedy corporate types, but peopled by introspective, non-reactionary, critical-thinking “sapients.”
It was read well also.

I can’t believe I read the whole thing.
Revisado: 03-12-21
Not sure what to think of this tale. I guess the best approach was not to think too much. I had/have no idea how to interpret it. Perhpas I’m not supposed to. Anyway, I liked some of the fables.
