It is 1898. Bound for Chicago, the freighter Jerry McGuen goes down in Lake Michigan, taking with it every man aboard. But what other fate could befall a vessel carrying the ill-gotten sarcophagus of an Egyptian sorcerer? Now: A veteran diver and “ghost ship” expert is exploring the legendary wreck for a documentary. He dies inexplicably inside the freighter’s main saloon. Then another diver is killed, and panicked rumors rise like bubbles from the lake: ancient demons have awakened below!

Decent Story....Horrible Narration
Revisado: 08-18-21
I struggled with this book. The narration was absolutely horrible. The voices for the characters as well as the attempt to cover up her non-American accent were very distracting. As for the story, I love a good strong female character. Hood has made Alton seem like a damsel in distress at times in this book and then turns it right around to her being an authoritative and bossy woman. Neither of these is an appealing character trait for me.
The plot was an interesting one though and a great warning of the capabilities of dangerous people with technology.
I might try one more of these books before giving up on what could have been a great series.

Historia
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared. She never saw Mercy again. Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon. So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate.

Not what I expected from a Baldacci book
Revisado: 02-19-19
I love David Baldacci books! I was excited to see a new series come out with a female heroine. I was sorely disappointed. This book was not full of the twists and suspense that a normal Baldacci book has. I was intrigued as the book started at the prison with Atlee speaking to the man she is sure killed her sister Mercy...reference to the title. This is the last we hear of this plot until the end of the book where we end up in the prison again. Atlee Pine's considerable strength, almost Olympic berth, MMA fighting skills are over the top.
On top of all this, the narration of the male characters was horrible. Every single character sounded like slightly different versions of a stupid block head of a man...similar to the Planet Fitness commercials where the body builder walks around saying "I pick things up and put them down."
I will continue to read David Baldacci books, but it might be awhile before I pick one up after this disappointment.

OK Story, Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 02-09-18
The story is a enjoyable if you are looking for entertainment, even if it is a cookie cutter plot. I would have enjoyed the story much more if the narrator had been half way decent. I almost quit listening within the first 15 minutes. With her little smirk in her voice in so many places she must have thought the story was incredibly humorous, some in the most inappropriate places. Other times it seemed as if it was her first time reading the book, with awkward pauses and odd cadence. Listening to her swallow during her pauses was also incredibly distracting and annoying.
I think this would be a great easy beach read, but don't waste an audible credit on it.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

This book was very well written. I loved that Rebecca Skloot integrated both the science and facts along with the personal factor from both her perspective and experiences as well as those of Henrietta's family. I have recommended this to multiple people already.

It was just ok
Revisado: 07-27-17
Would you try another book from Tish Thawer and/or Michelle Marie?
I would read another book by this author, only if I wanted a quick read that I didn't have to think about.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have developed the story much more. This was pretty much straightforward this happened, then this happened, then this happened. There was no character development and the dialog between the characters was simplistic.
Would you be willing to try another one of Michelle Marie’s performances?
I didn't really care for the narrator. The reading was a bit quick, and her voices were laughable in some aspects, and rather annoying and childish in other aspects.

No secret stays hidden forever. A phone call from an old friend sets mysterious book researcher Giovanni Vecchio back on the path of a mystery that has eluded him for centuries. Little does he suspect a young librarian holds the key to an ancient secret, nor could he expect the danger Beatrice De Novo would attract. Now both will follow a twisted maze leading from the archives of a university library, through the fires of Renaissance Florence, and toward a passion that could destroy them both.

Narrator Ruined the Book
Revisado: 04-19-17
Would you be willing to try another book from Elizabeth Hunter? Why or why not?
I will try reading the next book in the series as I have heard good things about the series as a whole. I will not listen to the next book though.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Her reading style and voice were very distracting. Her intonation, accents, voices, and general interpretation of the book were absolutely horrible.

Could not finish
Revisado: 03-05-14
What was most disappointing about Mira Bartok’s story?
The story was random ramblings of a woman's memories of her childhood, scattered with ramblings from her mentally ill mother's journal, with bits and pieces of current time fit in. I could not get into the story even after listening for 2 hours.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The book jacket makes it sound like an interesting story.

What a disappointment
Revisado: 02-07-14
What disappointed you about Seriously...I'm Kidding?
I love Ellen DeGeneres...and I was very excited that she was reading her own book. The story itself rambled on from one stream of thought to the next, none of which were very interesting.
What didn’t you like about Ellen DeGeneres’s performance?
Her tone was drab, the moments she went off on tangents (one involved me having to listen to her eating an apple) were awful.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was incredibly disappointed.
Any additional comments?
There were a couple funny moments, and some good points, but they were few and far between.

Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the story, as I have with all of James Rollins' Sigma Force novels. However, the narration was awful. All the accents sounded Asian, including the Italians. I think I would have enjoyed this story much more if I would have read it myself.
