Historia
Julia Ames, after a youth marked by upheaval and emotional turbulence, has found herself on the placid plateau of mid-life. But Julia has never navigated the world with the equanimity of her current privileged class. Having nearly derailed herself several times, making desperate bids for the kind of connection that always felt inaccessible to her, she finally feels, at age fifty seven, that she has a firm handle on things. She’s unprepared, though, for what comes next.

Beautiful truths of family life.
Revisado: 07-30-24
This is one of the most beautifully written stories of the real truths of family life that I have ever had the great fortune to find and read. The writing is intelligent and incredibly good and the narrator is the spot-on perfect choice for this book. I’m now going off (this moment!) to find another book written by this author…who is now one of my very, very favorites.

Strong women who beloved in own their value!
Revisado: 06-16-24
I loved this story of this beauty products icon. Estee’ set personal standards of excellence, had strong ambition that drive her to success and didn’t ever take a backseat to men..ever..even in the 1940’s and 1950’s when it was common for women to defer to men. I love that. Strong writing, e cell ent narration. Most definitely worth a read!

I hate when the ending of a complex story is ALL tied up in pretty bows!
Revisado: 02-15-24
The final chapter of this story that drew us into the lives of several fairly complex characters with complex lives was rushed and predictable.

When Liv and Nora decide to take their families on a holiday cruise, everyone is thrilled. The ship's comforts and possibilities seem infinite. The children - two 11-year-olds, an eight-year-old, and a six-year-old - love the nonstop buffet and the independence they have at the Kids' Club. But when they all go ashore in beautiful Central America, a series of minor misfortunes leads the families farther and farther from the ship's safety. One minute the children are there, and the next they're gone.

Monotone, depressed delivery and (trigger warning)..young teen sexual assault by adult male
Revisado: 12-15-23
Most important-Be warned! There is an alarming explicit scene where a very young teen girl is sexually assaulted by a mature male adult who is holding her and other young children hostage. It disgusted me beyond words.
As well, the reader’s (the author herself) reading voice has no emotion, is monotone, sounds bored and depressed with the content.
One of my least favorite reads ever.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
It’s been a minute—or five years—since Jordan Vargas last saw his college friends, and twenty-eight years since their graduation from Berkeley when their adult lives officially began. Now Jordan, Jordy, Naomi, Craig, and Marielle find themselves at the brink of a new decade, with all the responsibilities of adulthood, yet no closer to having their lives figured out. Though not for a lack of trying. Over the years they’ve reunited in Big Sur to honor a decades-old pact to throw each other living “funerals,” celebrations to remind themselves that life is worth living.

Love this author and his narration!
Revisado: 06-28-23
I’ve read everything this author has written and love his work and his narration skills…he brings real personality to his characters.
These were not, however, my favorite female characters.
I found them petty, entitled and annoying.
I’ll still continue to read anything this writer produces…he’s one of my favorites!

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

Another wonderful Steven Rowley book!
Revisado: 06-13-23
Steven Rowley’s stories and characters are full of life, emotion, humor and wonderful quirks. To hear Steven read his own work is a truly entertaining and wonderful experience! I wish I actually knew and had friendships with the colorful, honest, open and interesting characters in his stories.
A true 5-star listening experience.
