Historia
The aliens didn't conquer Earth. They negotiated exclusive streaming rights instead. Unbeknownst to humanity, the powerful Voltaxians controlled the galaxy, their vast empire fueled by their monopoly on mana. Humanity feared invasion, only to find out the godlike aliens had something far different in mind. The Voltaxians offered a simple deal. Allow them to set up dungeons controlled by living intelligent dungeon cores on Earth to generate mana, and they'd share the wealth.

Stereotypical main character
Revisado: 02-24-25
The worst part of this story, for me, was the stereotypical main character. He is a cowboy from Texas who moved to New York and goes back home to find himself. His motivations are to prove himself and while he doesn't believe the rumors about people, he feels he must rescue the ladies and protect their honor. Never mind that the women are perfectly capable of protecting themselves.
The story is satisfying, the lowly earther proving himself as he becomes more deeply involved in an alien conspiracy.

More like book 4.5
Revisado: 02-11-25
This is not a continuation of the series, it is more a filling in of the back stories, around the Field of Dishonor time. I initially thought that I got the wrong book, since a lot of the characters were either lower ranked or dead, but since Field of Dishonor is one of my favorites I continued listening.
This fills in the back stories for multiple characters and after the first part of the book, dealing the the duel, Honor is rarely mentioned. While the story is good and you get more information about some of the other characters, it was a disappointment to not have the story continue.

A glimpse into a life of Service
Revisado: 10-13-24
A good story about a veteran, who became an EMT afterwards, and then became unemployed. Possessing a "unique" skill set Rodger Mulligan is hired as a Butler for an eccentric "wizard". His job, keep his charge alive for a year for five grand a month with a million dollar bonus at the end. Not everyone is cut out for a life of service and Rodger finds out that it suits him. It has the structure he experienced in the military and fulfills his need for being of service. The story follows Rodger as he starts, and eventually becomes comfortable in his role, with the "wizard", and the house.

A good story that is very repetitive
Revisado: 11-10-23
The story is told from the view points of the different characters. There is a different narrator for each character to help you distinguish them. Frequently this results in you getting the same scene from the different characters point of view. I was okay with it, but as the book goes on, it gets a bit old. Fortunately this happens most frequently when there are just two characters in the scene.
The other issue I had was the book went on for longer than it needed to. Once you have the mystery wrapped up you can wrap up the story. While knowing what happened to the rest of the characters is nice, it wasn't really necessary.

Historia
In a small, unnamed town in the American South, a church congregation arrives for a service and finds a figure asleep on a pew. The person is genderless and racially ambiguous and refuses to speak. One family takes in the strange visitor and nicknames them Pew. As the town spends the week preparing for a mysterious Forgiveness Festival, Pew is shuttled from one household to the next. The earnest and seemingly well-meaning townspeople see conflicting identities in Pew, and many confess their fears and secrets to them in one-sided conversations.

Good premise, poor execution
Revisado: 03-23-21
The story could have gone in many directions and in the end leaves you hanging. Pew, a person who was found in a church pew that was used as shelter is adopted by the family that finds Pew. The entire books goes without you knowing any concrete facts about Pew. Pew is a gender neutral character, which bothers a lot of the other characters. Pew doesn't remember where they are from, where they are going, or where they have been.
There is a lot in the story to like, such as how people treat others, not only those they know, but those they believe they know and those they do not know at all.
Unfortunately the book spends a lot of time building up the festival event, only to fall flat when the event arrives.

This staggering amount of information - unprecedented in history - can tell us a great deal about who we are - the fears, desires, and behaviors that drive us, and the conscious and unconscious decisions we make. From the profound to the mundane, we can gain astonishing knowledge about the human psyche that less than 20 years ago seemed unfathomable.

Highly recommended
Revisado: 06-26-20
Learn the truth about what you think you know. Using large amounts of data the author presents the facts of why some things are the way they are. We may tell Facebook one thing, but we ask Google something completely different. Using data the author answer questions such as:
How can you tell a date is going poorly?
Why does a person interested in a baseball team?
Does going to a certain school lead to a better life?
How can you increase your children's chances of being famous?
The data is out there, you just have to know how to read it and ask the right questions.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

The perfect book for a drinking game.
Revisado: 10-04-17
I've listened to other books narrated by Wil Wheaton, so I didn't think it was me. I wish I had a searchable text version of this book to see how many times the author used the word "said". There is a piece early on in the story where Dahl meets Duval in a bar, you could down a fifth in that part.
That said (pun intended), the story concept was good, and the end resolution acceptable. I don't know if I'll try another book by the author as the writing style in this one was driving me nuts, to the point I was wondering if other authors used the word as much. I'm now two books later and, no there is a lot said in this book.

An airliner’s controls abruptly fail mid-flight over the Atlantic. An oil tanker runs aground in Japan when its navigational system suddenly stops dead. Hospitals everywhere have to abandon their computer databases when patients die after being administered incorrect dosages of their medicine. In the Midwest, a nuclear power plant nearly becomes the next Chernobyl when its cooling systems malfunction. At first, these random computer failures seem like unrelated events.

An eye opener for the non-technical
Revisado: 04-09-14
If you could sum up Zero Day in three words, what would they be?
Dangerous technology
What other book might you compare Zero Day to and why?
Daemon by Daniel Suarez both are eye opening books that show what could happen with the technology we already have.
What does Johnny Heller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A wonderful narrator who keeps you in the story and doesn't let you escape.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A real eye opener for how an attack really happens and how even doing everything right doesn't provide sufficient protection when you are targeted for attack.
Any additional comments?
A great book for those of us who know and love technology. An even better book for those who do not understand what is possible with today's technology and how open to attack we really are.

Not the Broadway show
Revisado: 08-10-11
I picked this up because I enjoyed the Broadway show. The characters are the same, the story is different. Things that I enjoyed about the Broadway show are not at all in the book, no good dead goes unpunished. However, the story stands fine on its own once you get past any preconceived notions.

Good book, audio quality is lacking.
Revisado: 06-04-11
I'm listening to all of the Piers Anthony books that I read decades ago. Since I'm doing them back to back the audio quality on this book really struck me as soon as it started. The audio is clear, but doesn't have the range of the other books I've listened to in the series so far. The narrator does a great job and the material is good, but I have been distracted by the audio quality.
