Historia
The women of the iconic '80s band the Go-Go’s will always be remembered as they appeared on the back of their debut record: sunny, smiling, each soaking in her own private bubble bath with chocolates and champagne. The photo is a perfect tribute to the fun, irreverent brand of pop music that the Go-Go’s created, but it also conceals the trials and secret demons that the group—and, in particular, Belinda Carlisle—struggled with.

Writing through ones demons
Revisado: 07-04-20
I never really followed the Go Go's career, nor was I a fan of Belinda's solo work, so I came in to this memoir with an open mind and clean opinion slate. I had no idea it would play out the way it did. It took me some time to get through it, but then wrapped it up rather quickly. Without giving any of the story away, one can't help but think this story is definitely part of her therapy. There's no shame in that. Writing is a great way to release the demons that plague us. Sharing it with the world is hard part, isn't it?

Historia
Few bands have inspired as much devotion as the Chicago rock band Wilco, and it's thanks, in large part, to the band's singer, songwriter, and guiding light: Jeff Tweedy. But while his songs and music have been endlessly discussed and analyzed, Jeff has rarely talked so directly about himself, his life, and his artistic process.

Great audio book.
Revisado: 11-29-19
I was familiar with Jeff Tweedy and his bands, but would never have called myself a fan. So, I'm not sure what drew me to this book. But I loved it. I loved the whole story, the way it was told, the way it unfolded. I wish I had been a fan, just so I could enjoy that connection to the history of seeing it through Jeff's experience. He's a fine storyteller.

Historia
Wildflower is a portrait of Drew's life in stories as she looks back on the adventures, challenges, and incredible experiences of her earlier years. It includes tales of living on her own at 14 (and how laundry may have saved her life), getting stuck in a gas station overhang on a cross-country road trip, saying good-bye to her father in a way only he could have understood, and many more adventures and lessons that have led her to the successful, happy, and healthy place she is today.

Getting to know you
Revisado: 06-13-19
Honestly, a couple of chapters in I wasn't sure I wanted to finish this book. The stories from Drew's life are interesting enough, and I like that she performed the reading, but at times I was just done listening. Sometimes her shrieks provoked me to turn down the volume, and I found her life to be mostly unrelateable. I realized that's not her fault, however, and after clearing my audio palate, listened with new interest. I can not to even begin to imagine what growing up and remaining a celebrity through adulthood would feel like. So to even get a glimpse of her experiences and growth via her stories, this book allowed me to at least contemplate the challenges that might go along with those circumstances. My favorite story was the chapter that followed her adventure with Outward Bound and truly feeling the joy she felt when she finally made fire. Not my favorite book overall, but I'm glad I finished it.

Color me surprised
Revisado: 06-13-19
Consider me Handler curious. Even after watching her Netflix shows, I still wouldn't consider myself a fan, but continue to look in her social media window intrigued by how she lives by her own rules.
This is the first book of hers I've read/listened to, and was floored by the performance, the writing, rawness, anger, and tears that oozed out of pages. This is the first audiobook that actually made me cry along with it. Thanks a lot, Chelsea. I have always admired anyone willing to try to become a better person. Chelsea may possibly be the poster woman for this effort. I loved this entire audiobook.

Runners' vocabulary is full of acronyms like DNS for "Did Not Start" and DNF for "Did Not Finish," but when Mirna Valerio stepped up to the starting line, she needed a new one: DNQ for "Did Not Quit."

Running sucks
Revisado: 06-13-19
I'll preface this by saying, I am not a runner, but my husband is. He introduced me to Mirna Valerio's Instagram and I continue to follow her for simple life inspiration. Her book expanded my very small understanding of runners, their determined spirit, and need to continue running, which has often left me confounded. Mirna was seemingly born with a positive attitude and drive that keeps her pushing through challenges that most people can find at least one they can relate to, making her an authentic inspiration.
The main thing that bothered me about this writing was I thought she overused the word "albeit". I like listening to authors perform their own books, bringing their voice and personalization to the story, but at times I felt Mirna was simply reading her book and not allowing her emotions to always come through where I might have expected them. Overall, a great listen.

Historia
Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

Not bad for an Audible freebie

This book reminded me of a long NPR story. Loved all the individual voices and production. It didn't sound like a normal book, which made it more interesting.
