fun time overall for a gamer

what I keep telling myself is this series is a good time. I'm having fun with the book.

I have to tell myself this when the characters are reflecting for the umteenth time on what makes the main character so awesome, usually the same reflections as the last 10 times.

Vocal range seems a bit limited in the narration as it takes me awhile to tell the female or generic smart guy voices apart.

I struggle the most with the contrived way that most characters don't seem to think of straightforward answers, making it feel like the main character wrote the book rather than an author able to step back from the contrived drama that the main character is self aware of.

Again, despite some story hiccups overall it's a good time to imagine being dropped into a MMORPG type world.

starts strong then let me down

I was really pulled in by the first 3rd of the book. It got increasingly hard to finish however as the protagonist got less and less likeable or wise while it seems the author had no self awareness of it.

Passing off self aggrandized nonsense as the way of a great man showed just how far from reality the book was.

For context I was sitting here as an alternative for running out of Brandon Sanderson books, and I feel this really lacks the balance of otherworldly fantasy magics with the key component of deeply complex realized characters.

I am not a super prolific fantasy reader but I stumbled upon Brandon Sanderson's books and fell deep because of the complexity of characters more than anything.

And in contrast, honestly I quit this series because I'm tired of rolling my eyes at the protagonists. In my opinion, dragging your heels against fate is a part of a story, not an interesting thing to have happen at every single belabored step.

I'm used to having a sense of the women and the "bad guys" having a reasonable and understandable perspective, so not even being able to put myself in the protagonist's shoes is something I can't keep on with.

I just don't see the need to have hesitancy be underlined 1000 times over multiple books. So, since I'm switching to another series and not necessarily coming back I thought I'd at least share why.

Despite the above driving me away I have to admit I did enjoy it enough through the first book and was genuinely interested at times, but endless dumb hesitency just isn't quite as human to me as it seems it is to the author.

I've been a bit spoiled, starting with stormlight and mistborn, I'd say both the story and narration of this first book was a bit harder for me to enjoy but having faith in Brandon Sanderson, I did in the end appreciate the book.

full cast was great highly recommended. you only miss a bit of the spaces between sections but I got used to it

loved it, I'm using it and feeling better about my own struggles, we all have a collection of mental challenges, listening to the whole thing helps get a sense of even ones that aren't a major issue for us.

Loved the two person cast to voice the paired female and male led stories running through the book. Both did a great job. Personally it was a friend's recommendation that got me interested in the beginning, since I didn't know or care about the characters at first even though it has a catchy start. I found myself getting more invested in the story over time. Would definitely recommend.
