Historia
Artemus Black doesn't believe in fate...but even a hardened Hollywood PI can question destiny when cases turn ugly. With an assistant who mocks him relentlessly, an obese cat that loathes him, a romantic life that's deader than Elvis, money problems, booze, nicotine, and anger management issues, how much worse can it get? The answer is plenty, and Black finds himself in a web of deceit, betrayal, and murder - and bad hair days.

Unlistenable
Revisado: 12-16-18
An unbelievable phony nod to noir. Worsened by the unlistenable shoddy narration! To complete the required 15 words review, here is my recommendation: don't bother.

A restorative
Revisado: 02-22-18
Where does Last Bus to Woodstock rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
quite high
Who was your favorite character and why?
Morse; always.
What about Samuel West’s performance did you like?
The pace, the punctuation, the absence of the usual English exaggerated dramatization. Just outstanding.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Look up the Tv series, enough.
Any additional comments?
An enormous restorative to the original series; brilliant narration

Waiter to the Rich and Shameless is not just a peek into the secretive inner workings of a legendary five-star restaurant; it is not just a celebrity tell-all or a scathing corporate analysis. It is a top-tier waiter's personal coming-of-age story, an intimate look into the complicated challenges of serving in the country's most elite, Hollywood-centric dining room while fighting to maintain a sense of self and purpose.

Historia
On a bitterly cold afternoon in December 1986, a Michigan State trooper found the frozen body of Jerry Tobias in the bed of his pickup truck. The 31-year-old oil field worker and small-time drug dealer was clad only in jeans, a checkered shirt, and cowboy boots. Inside the cab of the truck was a fresh package of expensive steaks from a local butcher shop, the first lead in a case that would be quickly lost in a thicket of bungled forensics, shady prosecution, and a psychopathic star witness out for revenge.

Pinning the murderers, but!
Have you listened to any of Jim McCance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. This one made me want to explore his other narrations.
If you could give Wicked Takes the Witness Stand a new subtitle, what would it be?
Would be the same.
Any additional comments?
A gripping, expertly written true crime story, superbly narrated.

Russia is insisting upon his extradition, and various government agencies are following him. A question dogs our hero: Why him? Politics!
Revisado: 02-14-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I happen to subscribe to S.S Van Dine's Twenty Rules for Writing Detective Stories where, among other rules, the detective novel must be just that, no side issues of "dallying" with "atmospheric preoccupations," particularly politics. If you share this view, you can easily skip this one.

Historia
While serving a life sentence for the murder of a young girl, Jack Unterweger wrote seven books, saw his critically acclaimed autobiography made into a film, and became a cause celebre among influential Austrian literati who successfully campaigned for his release. Riding high on the fame, he arrived in Los Angeles where he nurtured his career as a journalist. Then, one by one, Hollywood prostitutes started turning up dead. Unterweger covered the story. There was a reason why his reporting of the crimes seemed so vivid.

A Good Listen
Revisado: 02-05-17
What made the experience of listening to Entering Hades the most enjoyable?
A new and engaging perspective on a recurring theme.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Another testament to the delusional scientism of psychoanalysis at the heart of which rest the myth of repressed childhood sexuality and repressed memories that became one of the many metaphors by which to understand personalities, including those of horrendous serial killers.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Not quite but OK.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
Captivating.

Revisado: 02-05-17
What made the experience of listening to Above Suspicion the most enjoyable?
The engaging expressive portrayal of the characters.
What other book might you compare Above Suspicion to and why?
None.
Which scene was your favorite?
The court haggling.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me sad, but in a positive way.
Any additional comments?
Joe Sharkey's masterful writing shows how, in the words of S M Eisenstein, the most interesting question in the psychology of art is neither theme nor content, but how this theme or content becomes, from an "object" of reality_an object of art., how an 'event' becomes a 'work.'

Narration
Revisado: 02-05-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The writer, yes, not the performer.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
It was all him and very little Bramah or Carrados.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not really
Any additional comments?
The problem with most “celebrity” narrators, is that they induce so much drama into a performance to the extent of obscuring the very work they are narrating. In this particular instance, it was almost all Stephen Frey and very littlle Ernest Bramah or Max Carrados. Couldn’t complete this, half way, I had to call it quits.

Innuendos
Revisado: 10-15-16
What disappointed you about The 7th Canon?
Anachronistic, tangential socio-political thoughts, which I think defy a main rule for writing a "suspense" story: Timeless neutrality.
What do you think your next listen will be?
A classic detective story.
Would you be willing to try another one of James Patrick Cronin’s performances?
Not really
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Too few to mention.
