Historia
All the world's a stage...even when you're teleported to a new world. Struggling actress Cara O'Sullivan was walking down the street of Galway one moment, and the next, she was in an ancient tomb in a faraway world. Alone in the dark with her cell phone as her last tenuous connection to home, Cara sings her favorite song. To her astonishment, her song casts a spell of light into the world...and from the depths, something hears her. Challenged by a ghostly knight, a tragic necromancer, and hordes of undead, can a young woman who does not believe in heroes become one herself?

one of the best bard stories
Revisado: 05-06-24
I'm a sucker for a bard character and even more if it's the MC, so I went into this with high hopes and standards and it didn't disappoint.
the story takes place in the world of the wandering inn series but it's a stand alone story that isn't directly related to the original.
gonna be honest with you the real selling point of this book, and the reason for the review is the narration. I have heard audiobooks where they just speak the lyrics to songs but the narrator actually sings in this and it makes ALL the difference.

Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

can't stop listening
Revisado: 02-13-24
I've been fed up and done with the litrpg genre for a while now which made me skip over this book constantly. that was a huge mistake on my part as I have binge listened to the first 2 books and downloaded the 3rd.
what strikes me most is the dialog. the MC Jason is funny and witty, the banter between him and his friends is believable in the good nature ribbing they give each other, and he solves (and creates) more problems by what he says than what he does which brings me to another thing I love about the series.
while he gets rare abilities and power levels through the first couple books, he isn't over powered. he isn't the strongest or the best but that's a good thing because he can't just punch his problems away. he has to navigate through bureaucracy, politics and secret plots with his humorous eclectic personality because he isn't the strongest and could be crushed in a physical fight.
the narration is good no sound effects or music which keeps it from a perfect score but it doesn't detract from the experience.

The world of Awaken Online has been transformed. Gloria Bastion's attempt to destroy the game world failed, yet she unleashed a power that has brought the former avatars forward in time. And accompanying them are their cities and armies. Creatures, warriors, and mages from a time when the game world was fresh and new...but also more savage and unrelenting.

I hate time travel
Revisado: 10-08-23
to be up front of my personal bias and the minus 1 star I have grown to despise time travel plots.
if you are this far into the series you know there are two interwoven plots, one outside the game, one inside. the in game plot takes a massive hold and Jason takes a time travel mission/hands on history lesson. it's better than a prequel novela or another side quest story because it lets all the characters out to do real world story arcs, and that's where this book really shines.
you get to see the physical and psychological changes the game has made put into the real world. I think this is a brilliant concept authors forget about or do away with in litrpg stories by making the transition to game world permanent or the new defacto reality. it was painful to deal with time traveling but was with it in the end.

biggest anti climax
Revisado: 11-17-22
what can the combined Tufa clans do to fight off a banished psychopath, and a vengeful rocker displaced in time? it turns out they don't have to do anything. then everyone danced.
it's hard to express the frustration of getting blue balled by the story without spoilers but the biggest reaction this book got out of me was the frustration of a senseless resolution.

No one knows where the Tufa came from or how they ended up in the mountains of east Tennessee. When the first Europeans came to the Smoky Mountains, the Tufa were already there. Dark-haired and enigmatic, they live quietly in the hills and valleys of Cloud County, their origins lost to history. But there are clues in their music, hidden in the songs they have passed down for generations.

a very down to earth fantasy
Revisado: 11-13-22
I'll be up front and say this got 4 stars from me because of the very specific factor in the story which music plays a part.
as far as performance the singing was spoken even popular songs that could be looked up, there were a few times I noticed lines repeat, and while I don't hold it against them because it would cost more to produce they missed out on a hell of a chance to add at least some kind of musical accompaniment.
the story sticks closer to reality then fantasy but it did throw in every bit of commonly known mountain conjure it could and I recognized the broad strokes of lore the Tufa people are based on. honestly the closer to the end things got and the more fantastical it became the more it lost me. the blatant foreshadowing of the future romance in the next books has me turned off but if the next book is free as well I'll still give it a listen

Historia
Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

standard lit rpg
Revisado: 08-24-22
I fell asleep for about a half hour twice in this book and didn't bother going back. didn't miss anything that affected the story.
the MC is a Merry Sue character that can do anything and do it well effortlessly. the only thing that set it apart from the archetypical power fantasy is that he's just weak enough to be training for plot purposes.
it's fine for free and you're waiting for your monthly credits but it is exactly what you'd expect from the genre

Revisado: 05-29-22
if you've made it this far in the series you already know what this is and what to expect and it's more of the same in the best possible way. our hero Carl is blowing things up, giving the finger to authority as hard as he can, bending the rules and manipulating the system.
soundbooth has once again done a great job with multiple voice actors, music, and sound effects making this one of the most audibly rich series I've come across.
I've binge listened to this over memorial day weekend because I couldn't not keep going.

I love a good bard and this didn't disappoint.
Revisado: 05-15-22
I've listened to a lot of books here and the algorithm feeds me litmmos until I was frankly done with the genre. with that mind set in place I still have this 5 stars.
the main character isn't over powered like most Isekai, in fact he's discouraged from actual combat. instead relying on charm, allies and working a crowd. it makes for a refreshing change from your standard might make right conflict.
the narrators are good, having different voices for each character and multiple voice actors. I left off one star from my rating because of speaking lyrics instead of any attempt to sing and I know this company has added musical accompaniment to another bard tale they lacked here.
if you like the world of chains series this will be one you want to read.

a rare treat
Revisado: 01-29-22
before anything else it's important to point out the book is narrated by the author. I say that to say this:
the audio for this book is more a performance than a reading. being the author as well as the narrator the nuance is the characters and the mood of the story is conveyed in a way that done other narrator may miss. most note worthy of all is the songs are actually sung by the composer as it is meant to be heard. this makes the performance a hard 5 stars after experiencing a painful reading of lyrics by other narrators.
the story was fun and engrossing. none of the characters were overpowered, or chosen ones. the world building is a rare mix I was pleased to find new. and the dialog was a pleasing back and forth filled with light hearted jabs that makes you feel the comradery.
