Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

The Reasons Behind the Beginning of the Civil War Revealed!
Revisado: 06-16-24
This book was so well researched! Erik Larson is such a fantastic writer and historian. I thought I knew what led to the Civil War, but learned so much I didn’t know and had not ever heard about what led to the first shot fired on Fort Sumter. I have the book 5 stars but the narrator 3. His words and voice got soft at the end of most sentences and were hard to understand. Otherwise, it’s a 5 Star book! Highly recommend!

The Fabulous Howard Boys
Revisado: 12-30-23
This was such an incredible book about the formative years of Ron & Clint Howard and how they navigated being childhood actors to adulthood. The support they received from their parents and costars through the years was heartwarming and so interesting to read about. I loved this book and highly recommend!!!

Historia
She was born the 20th child in a family that had lived in the Mississippi Delta for generations, first as enslaved people and then as sharecroppers. She left school at 12 to pick cotton, as those before her had done, in a world in which white supremacy was an unassailable citadel. She was subjected without her consent to an operation that deprived her of children. And she was denied the most basic of all rights in America—the right to cast a ballot—in a state in which Blacks constituted nearly half the population. And so Fannie Lou Hamer lifted up her voice.

Very good Biography
Revisado: 11-14-23
Very enlightening biography of an incredibly brave and influential woman from Mississippi in the struggle for civil rights and voting rights. Fannie Lou Hamer’s light still shines brightly even as some try to disenfranchise voters of color in some states. Highly recommend!

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Amazing Novel
Revisado: 02-11-23
This is one of the best novels I have read in many years. Barbara Kingsolver is such a talented and creative writer to take on such diverse subjects and writing styles. I loved BK’s Poisonwood Bible and this is very different & maybe even better! The subject matter is at times difficult to hear, but the author presents it in such a clever and humorous way. It will have you laughing out loud when you feel you should be crying! I could not stop listening until the end. The characters were incredibly complex. I am going to reread David Copperfield to compare the plot and characters. Then I may read Demon Cooperhead again. It’s that good! The narrator is superb. Highly recommend Demon Copperhead!

Historia
In the still-segregated town of West Mills, North Carolina, in 1976, Marian, Marva, and Lazarus Harmon—three enigmatic siblings—are found shot to death in their home. The people of West Mills— on both sides of the canal that serves as the town’s color line—are in a frenzy of finger-pointing, gossip, and wonder. The crime is the first reported murder in the area in decades, but the white authorities don’t seem to have any interest in solving the case.

Revisado: 02-06-23
I really enjoyed the author’s first novel, In West Mills, and I enjoyed his second, Decent People, just as much and maybe even more!!! The character development was right on and made for a very entertaining, suspenseful read. Bahni Turpin’s narration is superb. I highly recommend!!!
