blew my mind, literally
Revisado: 08-16-24
Vignola's lovely British voice adds plenty to the narrative. Felt it was most useful as it was coming from "not an expert" but superiorly knowledgeable person who filled the book with personal anecdotes as well as strong scientific lessons

Historia
Do you feel trapped in your relationship with a narcissist who shows an extreme lack of empathy? Someone arrogant with rude and abusive behaviors or attitudes? Or someone who is highly reactive to criticism, have a low self-esteem, and react with anger or rage to contrary viewpoints? All the above traits are very common with people with a narcissistic personality disorder and studies have estimated approximately 17 percent of the general population as being narcissists.

Ridiculous premise
Revisado: 12-08-21
If Amber is dealing with people who are simply self-absorbed and not pathological, the pointers could be valid. The problem is that those who truly have a personality disorder cannot be changed -- and certainly not into a "Loving & Selfless Person." So the entire premise is presented for the gullible target of somebody who can actually be very punitive, malignant, and unable to ever HAVE compassion nor empathy. If you are in such a relationship, the only cure for you is to GET OUT. Following Amber's advice will only lead to endless frustration -- and only those who've experienced it can genuinely understand.

perfect celebrity analysis for our times
Revisado: 04-23-21
Pinsky and Young offer a lot of insights, with both a history of media culture and empirical studies of what shapes it today. A little sad that our culture today has been so shaken up by reality TV and how it mirrors the audience's fascination with becoming a celebrity. Pinsky is an ideal narrator, as well.

Historia
Tell a stranger that you talk to yourself, and you’re likely to get written off as eccentric. But the truth is that we all have a voice in our head. When we talk to ourselves, we often hope to tap into our inner coach but find our inner critic instead. When we’re facing a tough task, our inner coach can buoy us up: Focus - you can do this. But, just as often, our inner critic sinks us entirely: I’m going to fail. They’ll all laugh at me. What’s the use?

this is a great book for many reasons, but especially helpful when those voices in your head get overwhelming
