Brilliant Storytelling
Revisado: 10-12-23
Conrad is a genius at storytelling, and in Lord Jim there are stories within stories. This is also very much a psychological novel. Conrad’s language is brilliantly
descriptive. The narrator, Chris MacDonnell, is perfect for the role of the story’s narrator because he really sounds like a veteran seafarer might sound. All around great story and narration.

Historia
Typhoon is the story of a steamship and her crew beset by a tempest and of the captain whose dogged courage is tested to the limit. Captain MacWhirr was an ordinary man. However, when his steamer Nan-Shan blunders into a hurricane, he and his crew must pull together to survive. The steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate becomes a partnership vital to human survival as they are challenged from without by the elements, and from within by human doubts and fears.

This is such a great story—beautiful writing, sea adventure, high drama—it has it all. And don’t be put off by the title. This is not about prejudice. It is about our
common humanity.

Historia
Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky. Their subsequent affair scandalizes society and family alike and soon brings jealously and bitterness in its wake. Contrasting with this tale of love and self-destruction is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.

Historia
War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

Thandiwe Newton is Superb
Revisado: 04-02-23
I too was put off at first by Thandiwe Newton’s style of narration. It seemed like she was yelling a lot—especially for the male characters. But stick with it—she
settles down and gets better and better. She is especially good at creating a different, believable voice for each character. As far as the novel itself, it’s greatness
can’t be overstated. And Thandiwe Newton gives an epic performance worthy of it.

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (or, simply, Frankenstein for short), is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley (1797-1851) that tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a grotesque but sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition of the novel was published anonymously in London in 1818, when she was 20. Her name first appeared on the second edition, published in France in 1823.

Historia
By the end of Diocletian's reign in the opening years of the fourth century, the pagan world had collapsed into the arms of a multicultural religious movement which had spread from the eastern Mediterranean. These were the "mystery religions" which had been in competition with one another for a century. By the time of Constantine, they had spread everywhere within the empire. But one of these religions, Christianity, was chosen by the young emperor.

Great Book
Revisado: 11-29-21
I loved this book. You should probably have some prior knowledge about Constantine and his conversion; and there is sometimes way to much detail about the inner broils of the early Church. But it’s fascinating to see how one man’s conversion changed the entire history of Europe. The narrator is wonderful. I particularly enjoyed his deep voiced impressions while quoting an edict or letter of Constantine.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

On one level...Melville’s tale is an historical adventure telling the story of life aboard ship shortly after the mutiny at Spithead in 1797. Billy is taken from a homeward bound merchantman to serve on the ‘Seventy Four’ HMS Indomitable. He falls foul of Claggart, the ‘Master at Arms’, and the final confrontation results in death.
