Historia
At 18, Alexandra Wickham is presented to King George V and Queen Mary in an exquisite white lace and satin dress her mother has ordered from Paris. With her delicate blond looks, she is a stunning beauty who seems destined for a privileged life. But fate, a world war, and her own quietly rebellious personality lead her down a different path. By 1939, Europe is on fire and England is at war. From her home in idyllic Hampshire, Alex makes her way to London as a volunteer in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. But she has skills that draw the attention of another branch of the service.

Epic story
Revisado: 03-02-25
I loved this book. I expected it to end as so many WWII historic fiction do, with The end of the war, but Alex’s story continues through marriage, parenthood, and eventually old age. She remained a capable and impressive woman through out. It never became too uncomfortable or too bleak, which in our current bleak times was what I needed. The story and characters along with the delivery were excellent and ended on a hopeful note, even though I was brought to tears.

Historia
Penelope Parish has hit a streak of bad luck, including a severe case of writer's block that is threatening her sophomore book. Hoping a writer in residence position at The Open Book bookstore in Upper Chumley-on-Stoke, England, will shake the cobwebs loose, Pen, as she's affectionately known, packs her typewriter and heads across the pond. Unfortunately, life in Chumley is far from quiet, and when the chairwoman of the local Worthington Fest is found dead, fingers are pointed at Charlotte Davenport, an American romance novelist and the future duchess of Worthington.

Terrible narration!
Revisado: 01-19-25
The narrator’s pronunciation is horrible. I keep having to pause and repeat her phrases to my husband so we can have a laugh. It isn’t just a few more obscure UK terms. It’s general terms or location names as well. The story is okay as far as cozy mysteries go, but the narration does get in the way.

Character is too messed up
Revisado: 01-05-25
If you like messed up and weird characters, then you will love this. I stopped about two thirds of the way. The main characters issues became irritating.

Historia
Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions to walking trees to winged beasts in the woods to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.

Possibly the best so far

Great plot built on an eternal question and based on a real story. Not as tense as some of the others, which for my current mood was good.

Good story - as usual. Love the cultural references. I didn’t like the location of this story as well as others, but that is personal preference. I did want resolution with Detwilers housekeeper.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

Better than the tv series
Revisado: 04-05-24
In this second book the characters continue to evolve as more of their past and motivations are revealed. I appreciate that the tv series did not follow the books explicitly so there are lots of little surprises.
