Carrot has the gift of writing in detail about the joys and miseries of thru-hiking, without the curse of being melodramatic about either one. Engaging in its simplicity, deft in revealing enough that the reader isn't hungry for detail, but sparing enough to leave room for the imagination. I enjoyed taking this journey with her.

The narrator, however, needs to learn to pronounce a few words. She's completely wrong in some cases -- to name a few, Tuolumne became "TWO-uh-lummee," poor Seamus was called "SEA-muss," and the boughs of trees were "bohs" (though only half the time, curiously). In other cases, it's just that her accent is grating. I got so sick of hearing her say "fewd" that I was almost glad when Carrot ran out, just because it meant I wouldn't have to hear the narrator mangle the word as often, and I felt bad for the state of Oregon, whose name became "Organ" in this audiobook.

Accent and mispronunciations aside, the narrator did a very good job with the reading, neither overdone nor too dry, so it's a pity she distracted from her own otherwise-admirable performance.

Still very much worth a listen, and I'd re-read this several times over before I'd even consider touching another whine-and-gripefest written by Heather "Anish" Anderson.

The book itself is reasonably well-written, but I'm 7 chapters in and I'm about to give up on listening because the narrator is insufferable. Even when narrating basic facts or talking about a beautiful moment, her voice sounds perturbed at best, and in moments where the author is having difficulty, the nasal sounds of annoyance approach a level usually reserved for extremely irritated teenagers. It makes it feel like the author is never having fun or appreciating the journey, no matter what the actual words say.

Do yourself a favor and buy a print copy of this book, rather than signing on for hour upon hour of some nasal soprano princess trying to talk about nature. Have a friend or loved one read it to you instead.

I love a good hiking story. I love a good self-transformation story. This book is neither of those things.

The author spends 90% of the book engaged in self-flagellation of one flavor or another, seemingly totally unaware of the obvious -- that her drive to succeed is rooted in a deep-seated belief/fear that she is totally inadequate. She continues on and on, describing self punishment after self punishment, with no expressed curiosity as to WHY she feels like the only way to prove her worth is to get close to killing herself with exertion, no curiosity why she's so eager to tune out all the alarm bells indicating she needs to take care of her body.

In the last few chapters, she does have a brief reckoning with her motivation, with her internalized self-hatred, et cetera, but it comes far too late and is too shallow by a long margin.

None of this is helped by the narrator of the audio book version. The narrator has great diction, but between her diction, choice of inflection & tone, and the author's own tendency to overcompensate by using a $5 word when a $2 one would do, the audio version of Heather comes across as stuck up and prissy instead of down-to-earth, self-effacing, or in any way like someone who has truly learned to love themselves.

All-in-all, what could have been a story of transformation was instead a tedious slog through one person's near total inability to understand how much she hates herself. I'm glad this was available free via Audible, because I would be very frustrated if I'd spent money on it.
