Historia
New York City, 1953: Louise Leithauser's star is on the rise. She's filed some of the best pieces at her boyfriend Joe's brand-new literary magazine, Downtown (albeit under a male pseudonym), her relationship still makes her weak at the knees, and the science-fiction romance she's writing on the side, "The Lunar Housewife," is going swimmingly. But when she overhears Joe and his business partner fighting about listening devices and death threats, Louise can't help but investigate, and she quickly finds herself wading into dangerous waters.

Spies & Space!
Revisado: 09-06-24
What a fun, unique book intertwining historical fiction with an authors journey through Cold War, espionage, and publishing angles. At first I found Louise infuriating, though I should have given her grace given the 1950s time period, but she definitely won me over by the end and I was totally in love with this book.

Wow wow wow!
Revisado: 05-26-24
Usually I dislike infidelity, immaturity, and talk of pregnancy/pregnancy loss/babies (TW obvs), but this book is PERFECT. It’s deep and thoughtful and so fully fleshed out. I felt so connected to Rachel, even as her coming-of-age decisions infuriated me. I’ve never been to Ireland, but I felt this place, these people, this community and the way they all functioned genuinely to my bones. This book is beautiful and heartbreaking, accurate and raw, tough and necessary. I want to experience again immediately. I want to thank Rachel, to hug Rachel. But, I suppose I’ll thank the author for creating this masterpiece and articulating such intense perfection. All the praise.

Twisty goodness!

The writing was a little lacking. I got tired of hearing “it’s a long story” while I listened to this audiobook. But it kept me guessing till the very end- an excellent trait in a thriller. I can’t say I liked many of the characters at all, but that’s ok, too. Melissa was a great lead and her narrative and persistence were excellent.
Id recommend this to anyone interested in speech therapy, murder mystery, family drama, and medical reading (nursing, first responders, doctors alike).
Trigger warning for abusive relationships, FYI.

Excellent narration!

This story overall was excellent- lots of different perspectives and storylines, which really kept me in my toes. I really loved the narrator the most, though. Her voices were excellent and she made it so easy to follow even though so much was going on. I’d highly recommend this audiobook!

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Incredible story.

This audiobook was narrated perfectly. The details of this book are incredibly beautiful and breathtaking. I felt overwhelmingly attached to this man in his small, hotel world. I found myself giggling and crying while listening on my runs. This is a book in which any chapter can be easily revisited for a small glimpse into the Count’s life. I’m sure I’ll be doing that.
