I was excited to begin my listen - but I stopped short of finishing this story. I love Kate Mulgrew's voice and acting abilities. But I wish the story had been written without the foul language. Also there was a point in which God was mocked. And the fact that Marie Curie was having an affair with a married man was glorified repeatedly. Just not my cup of tea, unfortunately.

A great introduction to the reformed faith. I was very pleased with how everything was well documented with Scripture. The narrator has a mellow voice and for the most part, had little problems with pronunciation. I may listen to it again with the physical book in front of me so I can highlight important points.

The narrator's voice is very easy to listen to. It's actually enjoyable and it doesn't grate on my ears.

Orson Welles, Lionel Barrymore, what more could you ask for? Yes, it's "old-time" radio, so don't expect CD quality. But that's part of the charm. Listen to it late at night with the lights low. It's my favorite Christmas story, so very well-played.

I'm sure this book is good as a motivational piece, but once the author started getting into the "wonderful" benefits of mindfulness I was turned off. I didn't even finish the book. I have serious objections to the practice of mindfulness as a Christian. Its roots are in Hinduism and Buddhism, and while the practice encourages emptying of the mind, my Biblical roots encourage me to meditate on God's Word, and on the things that are pure, honest, just, true, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy. About 10 years ago I went through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which included a course that used mindfulness therapy. I applied myself and genuinely tried to incorporate it in my life, not understanding its non-Christian background. It did nothing for me. And now that I know its basis I have no desire to use it. The author didn't just mention it in passing as something he recommended. He was emphatic that it was a necessary part of becoming disciplined and successful. I emphatically disagree.

John MacArthur is an excellent teacher. It is obvious that he loves God's Word and desires for others to do so as well.

I was very interested in hearing the stories of these veterans, who, coming back from combat, had to combat their PTSD. Having PTSD myself (not from a combat situation), I was pleasantly surprised at the idea of handling this illness with comedy. After listening to their stories, I've decided that it's a wonderful idea! This was an enjoyable and educative listen.

Much better than the modern book of the same name

I was surprised to see that Charles Spurgeon was the writer of this book, and I just couldn't imagine that his teaching on the prayer of Jabez would be anything similar to the modern book by Bruce Wilkinson. Thankfully, it is not. Spurgeon, in his down-to-earth, matter of fact style, gives his take on Jabez's request, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed...." I didn't count the number of times Spurgeon repeated that phrase in this book, but it was enough to become a bit too much. I understand the reason that he continued going back to the phrase; it just seemed to me that he could have accomplished the same message without so much repetition. That said, I believe that Mr. Spurgeon's interpretation of Jabez's plea to the Lord is spot-on, and far above the interpretation of Wilkinson. Jabez's request was not a selfish request for advancement or riches; it was a request made of a pure heart to be used by God, and to not become what his name implied, that he would cause pain to others.

I was very pleased with this "slightly creepy" story of a train signal man, and the man who becomes interested in his story and why he is so fearful. I won't reveal the end, but I was pleasantly surprised at the conclusion of this short story. Stephen Critchlow was an excellent choice as narrator.

A great idea, but I found myself getting irritated by the competition of the narrator and the music. The music is every bit as loud as the narrator. I'll try the second one to see if it's any different.
