Historia
Best-selling author William Boyd—the novelist who has been called a “master storyteller” ( Chicago Tribune) and “a gutsy writer who is good company to keep” ( Time)—here gives us his most entertaining, sly, and compelling novel to date. The novel evokes the tumult, events, and iconic faces of our time as it tells the story of Logan Mountstuart—writer, lover, and man of the world—through his intimate journals. It is the “riotous and disorganized reality” of Mountstuart’s 85 years in all their extraordinary, tragic, and humorous aspects.

Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

An exquisite glimpse into early western life
Revisado: 02-23-17
I think Wallace Stegner writes with a controlled elegance that is thrilling. So many times I'd replay certain paragraphs to better absorb the beauty of his descriptions. I'd highly recommend this book to any lover of words. He's the consummate wordsmith. I'll probably read this book sometime in the future as I hate saying goodbye to this wonderfully drawn characters. It's a 10!

Captive Child Returns
Revisado: 11-23-16
Splendid old fashioned storytelling at its very best. Step back in time with two unforgettable characters that you won't want to release. Beautiful, nuanced writing, evocative descriptions, and myriads of well wrought minor characters make this book a pleasure from start to finish. Narration: point perfect!

Historia
It's 1939, and Mary, a young socialite, is determined to shock her blueblood political family by volunteering for the war effort. She is assigned as a teacher to children who were evacuated from London and have been rejected by the countryside because they are infirm, are mentally disabled, or - like Mary's favorite student, Zachary - have colored skin.

Wonderfully nuanced telling of the blitz.
Revisado: 06-01-16
I loved the writing style. It was poetic in description and so delicate and forceful at the same time. I truly marveled at the piquant humor of the Brits in the face of such horror and desolation. The characters were so well fleshed out. I felt like I knew them all. A very highly recommended book. I'm going to miss Alastair and Mary and Hilda.

Historia
After his experiences as a young naval officer in battles off Okinawa, Philip Bowman returns to America and finds a position as a book editor. It is a time when publishing is still largely a private affair - a scattered family of small houses here and in Europe - a time of gatherings in fabled apartments and conversations that continue long into the night. In this world of dinners, deals, and literary careers, Bowman finds he fits in perfectly. But despite his success, love eludes him.

Revisado: 02-21-16
Splendid, lush story telling. Beautiful thoughtful conversations with a myriad of interesting and well described characters. I love Salter's writing. It suggests a bygone appreciation of smallest details that make his characters, and the lives they lead almost jump off the page. A truly beautiful novel.

Historia
On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war.

Endless possibilities.
Revisado: 05-16-15
Wonderful exploration of the endless possibilities available in the " pinball machine" version of all the character's lives. They live. They die. They are reborn to explore other paths. Fascinating, beautifully written. Thoughtful, poetic observations about the meaning or meaninglessness of life.

Historia
As a teenager, it was never Sam Pulsifer's intention to torch an American landmark, and he certainly never planned to kill two people in the blaze. To this day, he still wonders why that young couple was upstairs in bed in the Emily Dickinson House after hours. After serving 10 years in prison for his crime, Sam is determined to put the past behind him. His low-profile life is chugging along quite nicely until the past comes crashing through his front door.

Felt like burning the book.
Revisado: 09-12-09
The main character was unappealingly flat and almost autistic in nature. He seems such a literalist (Asperger's Syndrome, perhaps?) - so one dimensional - that I found his character difficult to relate to. That's not to say autistic characters can't work as the main voice in a story. The Dog Who Barked in the Night is a splendid example of this. I really kept trying to like this book, as the story line was so original and quirky, but getting through it was a chore for me. Can't recommend this one.
