Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Peter Dinklage as Hercule Perot!
Revisado: 01-26-25
Peter Dinklage as Hercule Perot is brilliant in this adaptation. If only all of the books were re-recorded in this way. I enjoyed every minute of this production. Well done!

Historia
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

Character development and world building
Revisado: 06-25-24
The Tainted Cup is a breath of fresh air. In a world of retellings of the same stories over and over again, this is the first novel to hold my interest in more than five years. The characters are unique, flawed, and engaging. The world is imaginative, and yet believable and its consistency. Most importantly, the story keeps the reader engaged with a mystery that can be followed without being overly predictable. I look forward to joining Ana and Din on their next adventure.

A fantastic first novel from Lissa Price
Revisado: 08-10-12
If you could sum up Starters in three words, what would they be?
dystopian, creepy, suspenseful
Any additional comments?
I was looking for something that would grab my attention induce the same way the Hunger Games did. While I will not pretend that this is it's equal, Starters held my attention from start to end and i am looking forward to the sequel.

The best of the three
Revisado: 08-10-12
What made the experience of listening to Ptolemy's Gate the most enjoyable?
The third and final installment of this series is better than the first two books as the characters are more layered, the story is more exciting and the ending is very touching and a tad unexpected.
Which character – as performed by Simon Jones – was your favorite?
As with the first and second installments, Simon Jones takes this story to an indescribable level by capturing Bartimaeus' personality and "essence" perfectly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I liked that I was able to put this book down between chapters (until I got to the end).
Any additional comments?
If you haven't read the first two books of this trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye), I wouldn't start with this one. Without all the back-story there's a lot to miss. That being said, I think this might have been the best of the three.

Historia
While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Great concept, poor execution
Revisado: 07-06-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The concept and story of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter caught my attention; I wish that the author's writing style (mock biography meets journal excerpts?) could have held it. The style was dry at times and I found myself tuning out frequently and would have to replay sections after realizing that I no longer knew what was happening in the story (a rare occurrence with other works). I also found that Seth's shifting point-of-view in the book to be inconsistent and thus hard to follow. It seemed that he shifted POV out of convenience (from what perspective is it easiest and fastest to tell the story) rather than to make an effort to fill in the blanks.
Was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter worth the listening time?
No
