Historia
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (German for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism - but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

Wonderfully Told Holocaust Story Recounting
Revisado: 05-28-19
The recounting of Lalay's story was very well told and incited tears throughout. A good way to share this historic event in hopes of there never being a similar one in the future.

For the first time in years, I didnt finish a book
Revisado: 04-03-19
This one moved slow due to a bit too much dialogue and processing of thoughts. It lost my attention quite a bit, which is rare for me with books, and I finally got fed up with how we kept traveling back and forth and getting nowhere further in either timeline (which was probably the point but was emphasized a bit too much); but I gave up and couldnt even finish it once I realized I still had 11 hours remaining... which seemed too daunting a task, even for the most ardent book lover. The performance was well done otherwise, but she couldn't have improved the story itself.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

This is a profound book on so many levels.
Revisado: 02-17-19
I wasn't sure what to expect after listening to the introduction and quickly realized through cringe-worthy moments and triumphs that this was an amazing book. Great for book groups too since there's so much meaning to everything beneath what is happening at the surface level.

Historia
For Arturo, summertime in Miami means playing basketball until dark, sipping mango smoothies, and keeping cool under banyan trees. And maybe a few shifts as junior lunchtime dishwasher at Abuela's restaurant. Maybe. But this summer also includes Carmen, a cute poetry enthusiast who moves into Arturo's apartment complex and turns his stomach into a deep fryer. He almost doesn't notice the smarmy land developer who rolls into town and threatens to change it.

Fun teen story with a focus on family first
Revisado: 08-01-18
The descriptive nature of this book was wonderful, I could almost taste and see things the author described. The story was good though nothing totally new and at times I felt it dragged a bit in order to focus on family and smaller events. Definitely worth the listen regardless!
