Good story, but narration was painful
Revisado: 03-06-25
I really enjoyed the world, characters, and plot. These were just good books. The narration was painful at times though. The female narrator was good, she put feeling and emotion into it. The male narrator though. If I see his name narrating another book, I will never listen to it. First, his narration was flat and emotionless 90% of the time, as if he was reading instructions instead of a book. Second, you could hear him chewing on something or smacking his lips. Finally, if you're going to narrate, at least know how to pronounce what you're reading, the word I noticed weren't even unusual words. I would love to read more of the author's books, but if Maxx Pinkins is narrating, I will pass.

Good story, great narrator, really annoying MC
Revisado: 08-16-24
Overall thoughts is that it's not worth it. Not the the story is terrible or anything. Mostly that the Moore just extremely immature and never experiences any personal growth in the entire series. The narrator was great and really is the reason why I made it. I actually really enjoyed the world, the fun system, and all the great references with equally great timing. However, the main character is less mature than a 3 year old toddler with a temper tantrum... that doesn't end. I enjoyed the side characters and cared much more for them than the MC. At one point the author had the MC break the 4th wall and cuss out all the readers that didn't like the MC or his behavior, which came across very tactless and tasteless. I had about 3 hours left in the book and I must have accidently left the book playing, only to come back to the screen saying I finished the book. I realized I didn't even care enough to see how the book ended. So I didn't quite finish the book, and really, I wish I hadn't started it. I pretend in my head that the MC dies in the end because he throws another temper in the worst moment. 2/10

One great narrator, one extremely meh
Revisado: 09-26-22
the story itself was pretty, worth the credit for sure, though I'm also a fan of the podcast. I enjoyed the characters and the situation they find themselves in.
However, the narration...
Annie Ellicott was amazing! she did an outstanding job as she has in many other audiobooks I've heard her in. She makes the characters have feeling and seem more real.
Will M Watt though... all of his voices seem like they're on the generic setting. He doesn't read the feelings of the character. For example, early on he made an apology sound like he was mocking the MC instead of feeling regret. Lindsey Fairleigh did a much better job at the male cast on her podcast than Will did.
Overall I enjoyed it, but I will not be picking up the next in the series. Will M Watt's performance makes me wince too much to listen through another book.

Historia
My master created me for his entertainment, leading adventurers to ruin. Betraying them at the last moment, just when their glorious victory was on hand. I have been found again by the newest member of a quartet of dungeon crawlers. Poor fool. This time will be no different. Or does it have to be? Maybe I don't need to spend eternity left in a deep, dark dungeon waiting to devour would-be heroes. Maybe, just maybe, I can take him over and use this new identity to leave and masquerade as an adventurer myself.

He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned. The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face. Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.

An excellent book from an excellent series!
Revisado: 07-05-22
I cannot get enough of this series. This was a very well done of the continuation of He Who Fights with Monsters. We follow Jason throughout more trials and growth, saving the world and being snarky while doing it. After all, it's kind of his thing.
The narration as always is done magnificently. Cannot express enough how well it was done.

Ok story, great performance
Revisado: 05-11-22
The story was only alright. Though it was an interesting survival novel. The main characters are decent human beings which is refreshing. Though at times I found myself thinking "how could you be that dumb".
The narrators were absolutely on point! Great performance and I will be looking for additional books narrated by them.
Overall, decent and worth a listen if you want something that you don't have to think too hard on, but still be entertained.

Historia
The Ouroboros Project was my last chance at salvation, but the new, virtual reality was just as bad as the world I’d left. Backroom deals with corrupt nobles, slavery, and murder were all swept under the rug in the pursuit of gold. Despite everything, I found mercenary life fulfilling, until my guild was attacked. Now, I've got unknown, extremely rich enemies on all sides, a mysterious woman with strange magic and compound eyes, and a guild to save.

A let down
Revisado: 05-09-22
Right from the start, I did not like the MC. I was actually cheering for him to die to start with. The MC got marginally more likable throughout the books, but by the end, I still did not like him. The combat was well described and the Narrator did a pretty good job. The ending though, bleh, I feel like I wasted so much time on these books.

Good book, narrated well...
Revisado: 06-07-21
The book series itself I enjoyed very much. It was an interesting take on a magic system, characters that you enjoy, and a setting that was interesting. The narrator performed well, good distinctions between most characters that I knew right away who was talking. My one issue with the narration, is that words with "R" came out sounding as a "W". Lots of "agweement", "weally", and a character that is "Gwiffith". I know it's petty, but it really did take away a little bit. I didn't quite get used to it. Other than that, she did a great job, she brought life into the characters, even made them sound as if they were breathing heavy when appropriate. Pronunciations have always been something that bothered me, so if that isn't one of your things, then you'll be just fine.
Overall, I would recommend the series and encourage anyone to listen to it. Just wemember to be weady for those r's.
