An admittedly sad tale of child abuse, but written in the style of a breathless, B-grade newspaper advice column. Narrator tries to enliven it a bit, but look, this is not literature, it's a tell-all narrative best suited for one of those cable TV crime series. Dreadful!

I understand Bronte's place in literature but I couldn't wait for this book to end. The overwrought dialogue and sickly sentimentalizing of death ('oh sweet release from this miserable existence,' that sort of thing) reminds me of Dickens, but he tells a much better story, as does Jane Austen for that matter. Still, kudos to Emma Messenger for her fine narration.

Superb narration of a beautifully written novel. By today's standards the heroine's indecision can sometimes be exasperating, but that's more a reflection on the elite society of early 20e America than on her. Many parallels to Anna Karenina.

the author expertly tells the moving story of an extraordinary "common man" whose life encompassed the transformation of America from the 19th century to a superpower. very enjoyable and richly told, with an excellent narration.
