Historia
It’s been a year since eighteen-year-old River Lang’s best friend died in a car accident. And every day since, he’s had to pass by the depressing billboard that appeared as a result: a texting and driving PSA that reduces Dylan to a cautionary tale and River to the best friend of the dead kid at school. Dylan was so much more than a statistic, though, and River hates that everyone in town seems to have forgotten. When he’s caught improving (a.k.a. vandalizing) Dylan’s billboard, River is blackmailed into joining the Affinity Trials.

More than what it seems
Revisado: 08-29-24
What first seems like a stereotypical YA novel traveling a well-beaten path of tropes, this novel truly does something special. A tactful story about grief and sexuality, both tastefully done, this story delivers an impactful message that will surely stick with me for awhile.

Great story, poor writing. Story’s pacing is off and it’s quite hard to tell characters apart and what time/generation it is talking about

Absolutely phenomenal
Revisado: 06-29-22
Hands down the best post-apocalyptic novel I’ve read in a very long time. The queer characters feel real, and feel like they are fully fleshed out outside of their queer identity as well, which can be hard to come by in queer media. Additionally, COVID is tactfully integrated in a way that only enhances the story being told. I couldn’t have higher praise for this book

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Good story idea, god awful execution
Revisado: 06-07-22
While the story and premise are quite interesting, the writing and execution of the storytelling is awful. The characters are beyond unlikeable and have no development whatsoever. Additionally, there was so much story packed into such a short book. Everything was glossed over and made the novel lack cohesion. Too many characters where introduced and too many plot lines and facets to the story were added. So much of this was unnecessary and had no impact on the story.

Outstanding read
Revisado: 02-16-22
While starting off as a stereotypical teen romance set in a culturally/historically familiar backdrop, Noughts and Crosses eventually doubles back to avoid a predictable climax and storybook ending, displaying masterful writing and mature thematic elements. Not every small question or plot line is resolved, however, it mirrors the unsatisfactory ambiguity that reality brings. Truly an engrossing and thought-provoking read

Story feels off-color and poorly done
Revisado: 11-15-21
While I didn’t entirely hate this book, and even enjoyed parts of it, I felt that overall the story was lacking something. Or perhaps elements of it were too outlandish. Without getting into spoilers, I still feel that despite the “plot twist”, there was not a solid foundation or reason to develop the story in certain aspects. Overall I felt like the story was a Polluck painting with little considerate to details or realistic character development.

The story was so amazing until Morpheus retrieves all his artifacts. Then it becomes gimmicky and the story-telling becomes disjointed and weak. Production quality throughout is excellent.

Unbelievable
Revisado: 05-07-21
I thought this was just going to be the original novel with a few added voice actors. Wow I am so happy I was wrong. This is a fully fleshed out addition to the original, seeing sides of conversations that we didn’t get to see in the original book. The acting is fantastic and all the effects add beautifully to bring this classic to life
