Historia
In the tradition of Orange Is the New Black and Jerry Stahl's Permanent Midnight, Amy Dresner's My Fair Junkie is an insightful, darkly funny, and shamelessly honest memoir of one woman's battle with all forms of addiction, hitting rock bottom, and forging a path to a life worth living.

Hung on stereo types, privilege, and cliches.
Revisado: 02-25-22
The narration is good, moments of the writing are clever but much of the description builds on someone who is obviously privileged trying to be gritty, but comes across more like college flash fiction from someone trying to be more interesting than they are in a master's program. Much of the writing comes across more as clever quips than true deep exploration of the human condition and addiction, leaning frequently on racial stereotypes as a weak cop out, as opposed to actual character development and description. This writer hasn't found the actual story in the story, just another LA Burnout with better than mediocre talent but short of actual art. Best as chewy pulp.

Life with My Idiot Family: A True Story of Survival, Courage and Justice over Childhood Sexual Abuse

Historia
Seven-year-old little girls love their daddy. Kathy was no exception, so when her daddy started paying “special” attention to her, she felt “special” in turn. Her daddy loved her.
Few betrayals run as deep as the betrayal of being sexually abused throughout your childhood by the man you should have been able to trust with your life. For Kathy, the betrayal ran deeper because when she finally found the courage to start speaking out about what her abuser did to her, her family responded by labeling her a liar and a troublemaker. Kathy didn’t stop speaking out, though.

A tru story but flat in writing.

It was interesting because it was a true story. I couldn't get over the authors use of idear instead of idea.

Historia
In May of 2007, in a small, quiet town in the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic, a technical glitch - a simple, accidental crossing of signals - revealed a terrible case of child abuse, and an entire nation watched transfixed with horror as the grisly extent of the perversion of the maternal instinct was revealed. Two small brothers named Jakub and Ondrej, nine and seven years old respectively, were revealed to have suffered confinement, mutilation, psychological brutality, and cannibalism at the hands of several people.

My name is Elena and I used to be a human being. Now I am a sex slave. If you are reading this diary then I am either dead or I have managed to escape... Trafficked: The Diary of a Sex Slave is a gritty, gripping, and tear-jerking fictional audiobook, inspired by real victims' accounts and research into the sex trafficking underworld.

Glad it was only 2 hours!
Revisado: 08-14-16
First off the earnest longing tone of the narration is distracting and painful. The character is hallow and underdeveloped. The story while important lacks any visceral description or emotional depth. It is like listening to a made for tv movie read by a soap opera star. I was tolerant because I thought it was a true account, then realized it was a badly written, cliche filled rag of fiction.

Historia
Lit follows Mary Karr's descent into the inferno of alcoholism and madness - and her astonishing resurrection. Karr's longing for a solid family seems secure when her marriage to a handsome, Shakespeare-quoting poet produces a son they adore. But she can't outrun her apocalyptic past. She drinks herself into the same numbness that nearly devoured her charismatic but troubled mother, reaching the brink of suicide. A hair-raising stint in "The Mental Marriott" awakens her to the possibility of joy, and leads her to an unlikely faith.

Verbal masturbation.
Revisado: 08-24-15
I really wanted to like this book. I tried. But it seems the writer becomes lost in her own metaphors and imagery that the story itself looses any tension or momentum. The tense shifts loose me, which would bother me if I cared after the 3rd chapter. She is great at imagery and witty comparisons. But after a while the story is lost and it just starts feeling like an indulgent need to fill pages. The writer has real skill sure, but her skill alone couldn't carry my attention for 12 hours! I enjoyed The Liars Club but it got in and got out, it was a clean piece of writing. Then "Lit" took some cliche, "I found God in AA," twist that was so predictable I didn't expect it at all, which made me hate it even more. If you really, really love this author or want to fill a page with clever metaphors, well, you might love it.
