A Sparkling Gem
Revisado: 04-04-24
I could write a long essay praising this book, but i would still not do it justice. Elegant, erudite without pretension, well-informed, meticulously researched, written with utmost integrity and yet very entertaining, I find this book to be an excellent example of how truth can be much better delivered by what we call "fiction" than by any journalism in any land. J. Lawrence Matthews has treated two fascinating characters with great respect, tenderness, humor and charm. Who would have thought that Abraham Lincoln and Sherlock Holmes could inhabit the same book with such panache! I learned a lot about both, and consider myself royally entertained while listening to the superb reading of this book on Audible. The author has done Sir Arthur Conan Doyle a great honor with this extension on both ends of the life of Sherlock Holmes, written with such care to keep completely in character with the times and the original creation of Holmes. And the reverence with which he treats Abraham Lincoln in the process is equally honorable.
I would only recommend this book to the discerning readers that can truly appreciate the author's high standards.
Thank you, J. Lawrence Matthews. One Must Tell the Bees should be destined to become a classic.

Predictable
Revisado: 11-26-23
I knew very early who the murderer was. The characters are lightly drawn and not well developed for the most part. Dialogue is pretty good though, and the plot holds together even though there are few surprises.

Delightful romp with the Austen families
Revisado: 07-10-23
For a died-in-the-wool Jane Austen fanatic like me, you might think I wouldn't like the "next chapter" approach to continuing the stories of her wonderful families. But I loved this book and the one previous, The Murder of Mr. Wickham. Claudia Gray has studied Jane Austen's style but doesn't try to imitate it. Instead, she uses her own skills to construct a believable and delightful story, getting our old friends all together at house parties (brilliantly) and retaining each with their own personalities built by Austen, but adding a new generation that can have their own characters. I found this to be a great entertainment, and fulfilled my longing to spend more time with Jane Austen's timeless characters. Bravo, Claudia Gray! Encore!

What a treat!
Revisado: 10-27-22
This is a rare treat indeed to find a true mystery in the lofty style of the early mystery writers. Everything well formed and tightly written, but still charmingly engaging. So few of these are in our reading universe. Highly recommend.

Revisado: 09-19-22
I adore this series by McCall Smith. The 44 Scotland Street people have become very real and dear to me, and I love visiting them in the novels. This latest one exceeds even my expectations for the whimsy and joy his writing brings. I would not have thought he could make them any better than they already are, but this one is precious, in the best way.

Historia
The sisters of Gwenafwy Abbey have cherished their contemplative life - days spent in prayer, reflection, tending the convent's vegetable gardens and making their award-winning organic cheese, Heavenly Gouda. Life seems perfect, except for Sister Agatha, a die-hard mystery fan who despairs of ever finding any real life inspiration for her own novel. That is, until the abbey's sexton is found dead under an avalanche of gouda. Despite the reservations of the local constable, Sister Agatha is convinced it's murder and the game is afoot.

Hoping for more!
Revisado: 06-16-21
I loved this light-hearted but densely packed new mystery. The nuns are all individuals that I hope will be more developed in the coming books of the series. I want to get to know them better. It is the kind of cozy that draws me in and makes me feel like I'm part of their quirky but loving community. The narrator is excellent and easy to understand, with entertaining variations that make the characters stand out. Good job! More, please.

Historia
It is 1872, and a series of gruesome murders is the talk of London. Mycroft Holmes - now 26 and a force to be reckoned with at the War Office - has no interest in the killings; however his brother Sherlock has developed a distasteful fascination for the macabre to the detriment of his studies, much to Mycroft's frustration. When a ship carrying cargo belonging to Mycroft's best friend Cyrus Douglas runs aground, Mycroft persuades Sherlock to serve as a tutor at the orphanage that Douglas runs as a charity, so that Douglas might travel to see what can be salvaged.

Worst reading I have every heard
Revisado: 07-05-19
As much as I love Dorothy Sayers and her wonderful Lord Peter Wimsey, I have to send this one back to Audible. I could not imagine how they let this recording, which is SO clearly not up to their standards, pass through to the readers. It should be taken off the list and a reader found who can do justice to Dororthy Sayers' clever work. There are so many excellent readers, why bother with one that is this bad.

Historia
First-year detective Kathleen Doyle is a plucky Irish redhead of humble origins and modest means. Chief Inspector Michael Acton is her antithesis: a British lord turned cop. He's tall, handsome, and enigmatic - to a fault. He also has a knack for solving London's most high-profile crimes. Acton selects Doyle out of the newbie squad to partner with him on a series of investigations because she always knows when someone is lying - a trait that comes in handy when interviewing suspects and witnesses.

A haunting story, very tight, clipped dialogue, completely compelling. This one grabbed hold of my mind and would not let go. I couldn't sleep until I finished it. The reader is perfect and impeccable.
Don't read this if you are prone to nightmares, but definitely do if you love a psychological terror.
