This didn’t sell me on socialism

Author asserts that all problems are the result of capitalism and the world will be a utopia if socialism is embraced. And we can all do whatever we want; no one will be “in charge” because then everyone wouldn’t be equal so I’m not sure what happens when no one wants to do plumbing in a particular week because they are pursuing other interests and careers? He implies there will no longer be rapes, spousal abuse, etc because these horrors are only happening because because people are not socially, politically, and economically equal…hmmmm. He gave no examples of working socialistic countries.

Great thoughts

While the book did contain great thoughts and great ideas I guess I’m not very optimistic about humanity as a whole embracing these ideas and actions that would undoubtedly result in a safer more peaceful world.

Sad, but captivating story

This was such a sad story, but it takes place during a time when so many people suffered hardship after hardship at the hands of cruel regimes.

Narration was really good, made you feel like you were there.

Nice Jake Brigance Fix

I love the Jake Brigance series and hope there will be another full novel with the original narrator, but this was a nice little something. I enjoyed all three stories but the abrupt endings left me wanting more.

Poor Tess

Women have been treated poorly since the beginning of time. Tess never caught a break…or maybe she did but her self esteem was so low she could never take advantage.

Good Reminder

I am very concerned about aging well-keeping my energy, strength, and mobility-and avoiding illness and dementia. While there wasn’t anything I didn’t already know (except perhaps the more scientific stuff) I find it helpful to be reminded every so often the importance of eating less, being active, making time to relax, etc.

Great Audio Book

I’m so glad I chose the audio version of this book; I really enjoyed the multi narrator/documentary style. I liked that the ending, while maybe too perfect, was different than what I expected when I first started listening. I have to admit I find drug addicts/alcoholics tiresome and unappealing, but I guess it would have been unrealistic not to include at least one.

I read several other reviews and am really puzzled by the ones that were disappointed that it was basically a memoir about people that weren’t real so what was the point? That is what fiction is.

Thought provoking

It is disturbing that our lot in life is determined by pure chance; almost completely determined by where and to whom we are born. I’m blessed to have been born in a country that is not run by an evil despot where the government takes most of the resources while their citizens suffer, a country where I have many freedoms. Compared to a huge percentage of the world I am wealthy, but I live month to month; one crisis and I could lose everything. The way economics work it is much more likely I will fall into poverty than become a millionaire.

Could I give more of my money away than I do? Sure; however, you can look around and see that it is questionable how much it helps. Does it get to the right people or do the corrupt governments take it? If it gets to the people do they even know what to do with it so that it can really help them? It is sad to see so much poverty and suffering, but me giving away all I’ve earned just adds me to the problem; it wouldn’t be enough to pull anyone out.

Thought provoking subject

The world is very loud and the idea that the noise is our heads is even louder is on point. The idea of making time for silence and to do nothing is so appealing and I do think it could relieve stress and help solve at least some problems. I going to try to work in at least small pockets of silence into my schedule and maybe even implement a weekly day of no electronics and tv that I have been thinking about doing. Right now I’m going to turn off my Facebook notifications…I mean, does anyone really need to know every second when they get a FB post.😂

This book is one I will need to revisit; relistening to the last chapter could be a good reminder of how important silence is.

The narration was absolutely perfect.

Left me wanting more

This telling of the early years of James Taylor’s life left me wanting to read a complete memoir. And he has a really good voice.
