Historia
Lucy and Owen, ambitious, thoroughly-therapized New Yorkers, have taken the plunge, trading in their crazy life in a cramped apartment for Beekman, a bucolic Hudson Valley exurb. They've got a 200-year-old house, an autistic son obsessed with the Titanic, and 17 chickens, at last count. It's the kind of paradise where stay-at-home moms team up to cook the school's "hot lunch", dads grill grass-fed burgers, and, as Lucy observes, "chopping kale has become a certain kind of American housewife's version of chopping wood".

Racist as hell
Revisado: 10-03-22
This book was dumb and deeply problematic and the narrator’s accents are messed up. This author kept describing things a Korean character named Sunny Bang said as “little Asian coins” (??????) and described a horrific and graphic sequence of events where a minor is gang raped to illustrate the main character’s struggle with infertility. The author didn’t even have the consideration to make it a decent book. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

In 2014, on the side of a Los Angeles freeway, a One Direction fan erected a shrine in the spot where, a few hours earlier, Harry Styles had vomited. “It’s interesting for sure,” Styles said later, adding, “a little niche, maybe.” But what seemed niche to Styles was actually an irreverent signpost to an unfathomably large, interconnected, and influential multiverse: stan culture. In this book, Kaitlyn Tiffany, a staff writer at the Atlantic and proud superfan herself, guides us through the nebulous online world of fans, stans, and boybands.

A beautiful ode to small meaningful things
Revisado: 08-28-22
I’m a lifelong member of multiple wide-ranging fandoms. My fandoms have gotten me through dark and deeply lonely times in childhood and as an adult. They have nourished me and enriched my inner life. They’ve facilitated instant connections with strangers who became friends and even repaired my relationship with my mother (thanks, BTS!). This is the first author I’ve come across who ~gets~ it and can speak to the power of fandom without infantilizing those who engage in it. The history of fandom is absolutely fascinating and proves that almost all aspects of love, fixation, and devotion to an idea are universal (I.e., middle-aged women writing the equivalent of hate tweets to journalists in the 1940s). This was a delightful, uplifting, and deeply personal read. Thank you Kaitlyn Tiffany! I’ve never felt quite so seen.

Bridget and Will have the kind of relationship that people envy: They’re loving, compatible, and completely devoted to each other. The fact that they’re strictly friends seems to get lost on nearly everyone. For three decades, they’ve nurtured their baby, the Forsyth Trio - a chamber group they created as students with their Juilliard classmate Gavin Glantz. In the intervening years, Gavin has gone on to become one of the classical music world’s reigning stars, while Bridget and Will have learned to embrace the warm reviews and smaller venues that accompany modest success.

Underwhelming
Revisado: 07-18-22
This really dragged for the first third and it felt like a chore to finish. I ignored it for months and finally finished it on a road trip. The story was fine, I just didn’t care much for it. It felt like a lot was set up that just didn’t really have a purpose. A lot of peripheral characters that didn’t have any point, really. Also, the only two confirmed Asian characters are both just peripheral violin players? Come on. Having multiple narrators was annoying and confusing.

Fun and light
Revisado: 10-20-21
This one had a compelling premise and a few too many tropes for my liking (are narcissistic freeloading mothers having a moment??), but the characterization was enjoyable and it was a fun ride.

Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

One of the best books I’ve ever read
Revisado: 08-04-21
I was listening to this book while cleaning and running errands and found myself driving around aimlessly just to keep listening to it. Finally, I bought the paperback so I could finish it even faster. It is such a gorgeous journey to take with the characters, who are both so fun and likable (unlike so many “quirky” women and perfect men authors try to write these days, ugh). The author cultivates such a strong sense of intimacy between these characters that revisiting their past vacations is like being close friends with them yourselves. I was nostalgic for this book before I even finished it. And this book is fucking hilarious!!! Worth the hype and absolutely worth the listen.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Worth the Listen
Revisado: 07-05-21
I don’t listen to a lot of mysteries/thrillers but I listened to this one because the description caught my interest. It employs many of the tropes that make me turn away from mysteries (i.e. grizzled lady investigator with a troubled past returning to her hometown, etc) and Laura Chambers doesn’t really have much of a personality outside of being a good journalist, and that made it a tough start for me, but it really picked up and I’m glad I stuck with it. I am a cynical mystery consumer and usually have an inkling of whodunnit but this one truly surprised me! I recommend it.

Historia
In this fascinating narrative, therapist Catherine Gildiner presents five of what she calls her most heroic and memorable patients. Among them: A successful, first-generation Chinese immigrant musician suffering sexual dysfunction; a young woman whose father abandoned her at age nine with her younger siblings in an isolated cottage in the depth of winter; and a glamorous workaholic whose narcissistic, negligent mother greeted her each morning of her childhood with "Good morning, Monster". Each patient presents a mystery, one that will only be unpacked over years.

Beautiful and Powerful Stories
Revisado: 05-12-21
These stories are beautiful and extraordinarily powerful. I took so much from hearing each story unfold like a mystery. I was absolutely hooked on this book and cried at the end of some of the stories. Listening to this book will make you a better and more insightful person. Cannot recommend it enough.

A fun, indulgent listen
Revisado: 01-01-21
This was not the most gratifying story I’ve ever listened to and the “plot twist” was pretty easy to see from about 10 miles away, but it was a fun, indulgent, easy listen. The food descriptions were fun and the book shied away from taking the most obvious routes, which I appreciated.
