Delightful reimagining of very old classics
Revisado: 02-06-23
Fairy tales from many old, and a few not so old, sources have been completely reinvented and made into a very entertaining string of pearls. You will need more than passing familiarity with old fairy tales to fully appreciate the entire book, but even lacking such familiarity, this is worth a read. Then, when you finally do read “Jack and the Beanstalk,” among others, you will have that AHAH! moment so many of us enjoy.
The voice actors do a very nice job of reading their parts without jarring reversions to another voice for the inevitable transitions back to written text/narrative.
I have actually fully listened to this twice. I might come back for a third listen in a year or two.

Not for the casual reader
Revisado: 01-28-23
This book is written much more in the style of Edgar A Poe than in that of any current author. Not surprising given Mr Anderson’s generation. Most will find it difficult to read/listen to. You must work at it. However, for those with the will to work through it there are rewards of beautifully crafted passages; even though many are of the darkest kind of beauty. Be prepared. It is a very dark and grim story with no happy ending. The body count probably surpasses E. R. Burroughs’ Barsoom books put together. It is not a work that many will reread even once. It IS worth reading just this once.

Historia
The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

Brilliantly done. From such a simple concept what a diverse and interesting wrap up.
Revisado: 09-09-17
The inevitable chafing dissatisfaction with the second book is now very well rewarded with the third act. If Mr Taylor never writes another word I will be grateful for what he has given us. Extraordinary breadth of vision but staying within in the bounds of "science fiction" is not easy, but he has done it. Thank you.

Historia
In a distant galaxy of colonized planets, the atrocity of slavery is alive and well. Young Thorby was just another bedraggled orphan boy sold at auction, but his new owner, Baslim, is not the disabled beggar he appears to be. Adopting Thorby as his son, Baslim fights relentlessly as an abolitionist spy. When the authorities close in on Baslim, Thorby must find his own way in a hostile galaxy. Joining with the Free Traders, a league of merchant princes, Thorby must find the courage to live by his wits and fight his way up from society's lowest rung.

A story beyond its time
Revisado: 03-27-15
Perhaps not RAH's best but but very worth reading. Slavery, without reference to race (completely different concept) is central. Written in the late 50's??? Incredible. Shifting frames of reference from the point of view of an adolescent male are instructive. Females who (truly) wish to understand male psychology might give this a read. Females who wish to denigrate males will no doubt pass, as usual.
