Blending gruesome fiction with great characters
Revisado: 10-07-24
Loved the detail of the murderers and the detective work by Holly.
King displays his genius for combining modern America with his fiction that is always addictive in its structure and descriptions.

Historia
Megan Devine offers a profound new approach to both the experience of grief and the way we help others who have endured tragedy. Having experienced grief from both sides - as both a therapist and as a woman who witnessed the accidental drowning of her beloved partner - Megan writes with deep insight about the unspoken truths of loss, love, and healing.

Empathetic author
Revisado: 08-22-24
The author makes an excellent effort to redefine how we approach grief. The book focuses specifically on acute grief regarding the death of her husband. She is on to something in trying to have those in grief be treated with kindness and to be given their own path to grieving instead of being forced into a box of either being being 1. Either being thought of as eternally unhappy sad sacks if they are not able to quickly get past their grief or 2. Or falsely strong and able to “move on” in an appropriately quick time. She seeks a new definition that is not as rigid as the oft referenced stages of grief.
Overall, for those in acute grief it is a very well thought out work. But for those of us grieving at length from trauma or deaths in the recent past, the book is less focused on the long road of suffering that many of us face.
Those facts do not diminish the decency and effort to instruct those in the grip of grief to seek their own path to dealing with their heartache
It is apparent the author is well versed in the subject of grief and has clearly suffered from grief and she had numerous unfortunate experiences with folks who tried to compare their grief with hers or offered simplistic solutions to her sadness and loss.
I wish the author and anyone who needs this book all the best. There is no one way to grieve that fits all. The author makes that clear.

Mr. Raines is not a racist. Big deal
Revisado: 01-23-24
I thought the book would be about the actual cavalry. Instead, it is a tribute to Mr. Raines enlightened family regarding their racial tolerance in Alabama. As an Alabamian, I can attest to the malignant racism that blighted our state for over a 150 years or more. Many of us grew up with a similar aborrhence to racism that surrounded us in Birmingham and throughout the state. Mr. Raines does have an impressive family tree of anti-racists. So if you want to read about that, buy this book.
The narrator does a good job on this autobiographical pat on the back written by Mr. Raines.

Historia
It was a crime that shocked the nation: the brutal murder in Chicago in 1924 of a child by two wealthy college students who killed solely for the thrill of the experience. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were intellectuals - too smart, they believed, for the police to catch them. When they were apprehended, state's attorney Robert Crowe was certain that no defense could save the ruthless killers from the gallows.

Historia
In April of 1846, 21-year-old Sarah Graves, intent on a better future, set out west from Illinois with her new husband, her parents, and eight siblings. Seven months later, after joining a party of pioneers led by George Donner, they reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains as the first heavy snows of the season closed the pass ahead of them. In early December, starving and desperate, Sarah and 14 others set out for California on snowshoes and over the next 32 days endured almost unfathomable hardships and horrors.

Beautifully written story of Donner party tragedy
Revisado: 05-02-23
I cannot imagine a more exceptionally written and researched story about an incredibly brave but disastrous group journey and their quest to go to California in the 1840’s. The only other book I can compare it to for writing style and research is “Son of the Morningstar,” about Custer’s last stand by Evan S. Connnel. They are both remarkable although the Indifferent Stars Above truly stands out as it pieces together and foretells a powerful story of human endurance and disaster. The author also does a phenomenal job of describing the medical consequences of extreme starvation and other illnesses the miserable group would have encountered.
Lastly, the narrator is perfect for this tale of tragedy.

Historia
12 Strong is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators as they rode into the city. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn.

Excellent but a sad reminder
Revisado: 11-19-22
This is a well told and researched story about our early success in Afghanistan. There are many excellent humanizing undercurrents weaved into this tale of war and the inhumanity of the Taliban. However, due to our disastrous departure from Afghanistan and the fact the pathologically vicious and cruel Taliban now run Afghanistan, one can not only revere but also remember how brave, fearless and smart our American special forces soldiers fought for a beleaguered, tortured and terrified country that hoped we would rid them of the menacing and cruel Taliban. We gave them a window of hope and then closed it after an unfortunate 20 years of fighting.

Sidekick to SS Chief Heinrich Himmler and supervisor of Nazi rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, General Hans Kammler was responsible for the construction of Hitler's slave labor sites and concentration camps. He personally altered the design of Auschwitz to increase crowding, ensuring that epidemic diseases would complement the work of the gas chambers. Why has the world forgotten this monster? Kammler was declared dead after the war. But the aide who testified to Kammler's supposed "suicide" never produced the general's dog tags or any other proof of death.
