Historia
The Civil War battle waged on September 17, 1862, at Antietam Creek, Maryland, was one of the bloodiest in the nation's history: On this single day, the battle claimed nearly 23,000 casualties. In Landscape Turned Red, the renowned historian Stephen Sears draws on a remarkable cache of diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam as experienced not only by its leaders but also by its soldiers, both Union and Confederate.

A great telling account of the battle of Antietam
Revisado: 10-16-22
I have several books on the battle of Antietam. Regardless of this fact, I enjoyed the audiobook. The narrator did an excellent presentation and added immensely to my enjoyment. Moreover, I learned some facts missing from the other books and audiobooks in my library.

Historia
The history of the United States displays an uncanny pattern: At moments of crisis, when the odds against success seem overwhelming and disaster looks imminent, fate intervenes to provide deliverance and progress. Historians may categorize these incidents as happy accidents, callous crimes, or the products of brilliant leadership, but the most notable leaders of the past 400 years have identified this good fortune as something else - a reflection of divine providence.

One of the best American history lessons
Revisado: 02-21-21
This book has many, many interesting facts I have never heard before. As example: I was taught that gold was discovered in California which resulted in the great California gold rush. I was not taught that there was a treaty being signed, the very same week and possibly the very same day, that gold was first discovered. A Mexican delegation and an American delegate signed the treaty to end the war between Mexico and The United States. A huge area of northern Mexico was ceded to the United States, including California. When gold was discovered California was still Mexican territory. Neither one of the parties signing the treaty were aware of the discovery of gold while negotiations were ongoing.

Historia
In the summer of 1967, Mark Garrison had dropped out of college at Southern Illinois University just before entering his third year. He had run out of money and had to work for a while. These were the days before the lottery and the draft soon came calling. In order to somewhat control his own future, he enlisted in the US Army's helicopter flight school program. Little did he know that this adventure would be the most profound experience of his life.

Gutsy combat helicopter pilots
Revisado: 01-31-21
I learned much from this pilot's story of his tour in Vietnam. My favorite chapter is "A great ball of fire". As the pilot said, when you think it cannot get any worse, it can.

Historia
Audie Murphy was a desperately poor eighteen-year-old orphan when he joined the Army, nineteen when he first saw a buddy die from an enemy bullet and an enemy die from one of his own. By VE day, he had killed at least 240 Germans, had single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and had become the most decorated soldier in American history, winning every medal his country offered, including the Congressional Medal of Honor.

To Hell and Back: the movie and the audiobook
Revisado: 07-04-20
I have seen Audie's WWII movie many, many times as a kid. I did not think I would enjoy his audiobook too much. I bought the audiobook anyway. I was completely wrong in my judgment of the audiobook. I now have listened to the audiobook. It is a great narrative of a G.I. in combat with the Germans. I will listen to it again in the future.

Grant Moves South
Revisado: 04-17-17
Author Bruce Catton was excellent at turning a historical event or period into a wonderful and interesting story, either to read in a book or listen to on audiobook.
The narrator, Bronson Pinchot, made the story-telling even more pleasing to the listener by moving the narrative along at just the right pace.
