Historia
Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith’s canonical book on political science turned conventional wisdom on its head. They started from a single assertion: leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don’t care about the “national interest”—or even their subjects—unless they must. Newly updated to reflect the global rise of authoritarianism, this clever and accessible book illustrates how leaders amass and retain power. As Bueno de Mesquita and Smith show, democracy is essentially just a convenient fiction.

Brilliant Insight, Tainted by Political Bias
Revisado: 04-19-24
Fascinating insight into power and corruption, with thought provoking recommendations. Credibility of the authors is somewhat tainted by political bias. They exhibit a penchant for picking Republicans as examples of negative behaviors while often steering away or softening examples involving Democrats. Their equating of illegal activity that occurred during January 6th 2021 Capitol Hill protests with the WWII attack on Pearl Harbor is unhinged from reality. Though framed in a way convenient to the narrative of the book, conscious or unconscious author bias detracts from an otherwise brilliant work.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Historia
At the height of World War II, LOOK Magazine profiled a small American community for a series of articles portraying it as the wholesome, patriotic model of life on the home front. Decades later, author Matthew A. Rozell tracks down over 30 survivors who fought the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to the surrender at Tokyo Bay. The book resurrects firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war.

Historia
Zero day: a software bug that allows a hacker to break into your devices and move around undetected. One of the most coveted tools in a spy's arsenal, a zero day has the power to silently spy on your iPhone, dismantle the safety controls at a chemical plant, alter an election and shut down the electric grid (just ask Ukraine). For decades, under cover of classification levels and non-disclosure agreements, the United States government became the world’s dominant hoarder of zero days.

Insightful View of How Situation Evolved
Revisado: 06-04-23
Very thorough and insightful explanation of the history of how cybersecurity evolved to our current precarious situation. Definitely listen to the Epilogue. At times the author is blinded by reactionary political partisanship. Also the reference to the book Dune being a post nuclear war story is incorrect…. :) Overall recommended, brings fresh insight and approachability to the topic, despite some flaws.

Historia
The United States and China are locked in a “cold tech war", and the winner will end up dominating the 21st century. America can still catch up. Unfortunately, Americans, focused on other matters, are not meeting the challenges China presents. A whole-of-society mobilization will be necessary for the US to regain what it once had: control of cutting-edge technologies. Americans may not like the fact that they’re once again in a Cold War-type struggle, but they will either adjust to that reality or get left behind.

Try this book!
Revisado: 11-12-22
I almost stopped listening in the first few chapters and tossed in the digital trash bin, but wow am I glad I stuck with it, amazing!! The author does exactly what the title says, he explains alcohol in a way I have never encountered before. At most every concept he explained, a lightbulb went off.
I was initially put off by his dismissive comments towards AA and religious faith, and he can sound slightly pompous. I am so glad I gave him listening time. He actually makes fun of himself quite a bit, and the concepts he provides can be life changing in an amazing way.

Historia
When we think about the future of war, the military and Washington and most everyone gets it backwards. We think in terms of buying single military systems, such as fighter jets or aircraft carriers. And when we think about modernizing those systems, we think about buying better versions of the same things. But what really matters is not the single system but "the battle network"—the collection of sensors and shooters that enables a military to find an enemy system, target it, and attack it.
