Historia
In this first novel, we are introduced to suave, handsome Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal, but he grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

Masterpiece
Revisado: 08-03-24
Needless to say, this is an excellent suspenseful thriller and all time classic of the genre.
I would love to give five stars, but it continues to bother me how the narrator butchers and mispronounces Italian names and words. Would it have been too much to ask to learn the correct pronunciation before recording the book?

Brilliant performance!
Revisado: 05-26-22
I‘ll confess, I downloaded this because it was free, but I absolutely got hooked. I don‘t think I could bring myself to read „Anna Karenina“ as a paper format.
Just one little criticism: There are a few German quotes throughout the book, and Gyllenhaal butchers them terribly every time! There appears to be a general understanding that English speaking audiences won‘t notice one way or the other, so who cares…

Historia
Say the word Israel today and it sparks images of walls and rockets and a bloody conflict without end. Yet for decades the symbol of the Jewish State was the noble pioneer draining the swamps and making the deserts bloom: the legendary kibbutznik. So what ever happened to the pioneers' dream of founding a socialist utopia in the land called Palestine? Chasing Utopia: The Future of the Kibbutz in a Divided Israel draws listeners into the quest for answers to the defining political conflict of our era.

Narration is offensive
Revisado: 04-29-22
My main complaint about this book is the narration: Every time Hebrew speakers are quoted, which is often, the narrator gives them a fake - what he apparently considers to be Hebrew - accent. This is entirely uncalled for and degrading to the people who are quoted. It makes them sound silly and more like drunk Russians from a third rate Cold War action movie. To top this nonsense off, the narrator mispronounces Hebrew names in spite of his silly imitation.
The content starts out interesting and varied, at times entertaining and even amusing. I actually laughed out loud about the German kibbutz volunteer who “makes the party”, knowing exactly from where this little grammatical idiosyncrasy originates.
Soon enough though, the book becomes a political manifesto, pontificating and droning on to the point of becoming unbearable. I did not finish it.

Historia

Revisado: 04-03-22

Historia
It was a crime that shocked the nation: the brutal murder in Chicago in 1924 of a child by two wealthy college students who killed solely for the thrill of the experience. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were intellectuals - too smart, they believed, for the police to catch them. When they were apprehended, state's attorney Robert Crowe was certain that no defense could save the ruthless killers from the gallows.

Revisado: 10-04-21
Very informativ book. A lot of detail and research went into this.
I don‘t care for the narrator though. He puts on fake pathos, almost as if he is mocking the story. That‘s as inappropriate as it is uncalled for. The brutal murder of a child remains sad and tragic even a hundred years later.

Historia
In the Name of the Children gives an unflinching look at what it's like to fight a never-ending battle against an enemy far more insidious than terrorists: the predators, lurking amongst us, who seek to harm our children. During his 30-year career with the FBI, Jeff Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children: from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse. Those who do this kind of work are required to plumb the depths of human depravity, to see things no one should ever have to see - and once seen can never forget.

The Nerve of Rinek,...
Revisado: 08-22-21
...to call his book „In the Name of the Children.
We learn almost nothing about the victims, but have to - just to give an example - listen to the „letter of apology“ from serial killer Cary Stayner that Rinek had „asked him to write“, before he ran off to console his family - yes, Stayner‘s, not the victims‘ families. As if Stayner were just a first grader who had pushed another kid of the swing at the playground.
With all due respect for Rinek‘s willingness and ability to see goodness in every human being: This book was obviously written to advance Rinek‘s ego, and definitely not „in the name of the Children“.

In the tradition of Into the Wild comes an instant classic of outdoor literature, a riveting work of uncommon depth. I’m planning on doing four days in the jungle.... It should be difficult to get lost forever: These were the haunting last words legendary adventurer Roman Dial received from his son, before the 27-year old disappeared into the jungles of Costa Rica. This is Dial's intensely gripping and deeply moving account of his two-year quest to unravel the mystery of his son's fate.

Memoir of a Man‘s Man
Revisado: 08-15-21
I bought this book because ever since „Fatal Vision“, I‘m a big fan of the narrator Fred Sanders. Even he seems to get bored with this book though, and reads fast and often without involvement - as if he was trying to get this read out of the way.
The author basically wrote a book about himself. You‘d think that losing a son would be not only a devastating, but also humbling experience, but apparently not for this He-Man. He keeps rambling on about his own greatness and accomplishments, just as if the great outdoors had only just come to existence through him. I know the type, I‘m Alaskan myself.

Historia
From award-winning journalist David Kushner, Alligator Candy is a reported memoir about family, survival, and the unwavering power of love. David Kushner grew up in the early 1970s in the Florida suburbs. It was when kids still ran free, riding bikes and disappearing into the nearby woods for hours at a time. One morning in 1973, however, everything changed. David’s older brother, Jon, biked through the forest to the convenience store for candy, and never returned.

Heartbreaking story
Revisado: 06-18-21
This book tells a sad, heartbreaking story, yet is beautifully told and fascinating.
I do not care much for the narrator: He seems close to tears himself through several passages of the book. It is unclear if he’s putting on an act or is actually having trouble to keep it together. This is distracting and uncomfortable. The story is heartbreaking by itself and does not require any “here comes some extra sad stuff”-prompts from the narrator.
