Legacy
Revisado: 10-08-24
Verghese is truly one of the best! Loved every minute of this family tale. Set in Africa for most of the story,I learned so much about Ethiopia, its history, people, and food. But the Indian families represented to me the resilience of immigrants everywhere and their often unappreciated contributions to the communities around them. This should be made into a miniseries! I’m sorry it is finished.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Family/Art/Medicine
Revisado: 06-17-24
This book transported me to India in a way no other has. I felt like I was a member of the family and a medical student. I was plunged into the river of time, immersed in the lives of the people, carried away with the current of political and cultural events. I cannot wait to read more of Abraham Verghese.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Never underestimate a Woman
Revisado: 05-15-24
This story makes me proud and angry. Proud to be a strong woman who stands up for what is right. Angry that, like Martha, women are still marginalized and dismissed in so many ways. A story that rips your heart out while reassuring you that good will prevail. Don’t rush it-savor it.

Historia
On humanity's first extra-solar mission, the exploration vessel Magellan, or, as she prefers, "Maggie", discovers an alien artifact. Deciding that finding advanced alien life is too important to ignore, Captain Allison Ridgeway chooses to return to Earth while ordering her crew to reverse engineer technology far beyond anything back home. Meanwhile, at mission control, the governments struggle to maintain the existence of aliens a secret while also combating bureaucracy, the military industrial complex, and everyone else who wants a piece of what could skyrocket humanity into a new technological age.

Fun and full of Twists
Revisado: 02-28-23
The story sucks you in. Varying points of view alternating between humans and aliens kept my interest. If you pay attention there are clues to help anticipate the ending. Quite a fun listen!

Historia
Ever-turbulent humanity has reached out to the stars and found itself challenged by several “exosapient” species whose motivations are as unusual as their physical forms. But no world is defined just by the characters who occupy center stage. Lost Signals digs deep into the lives - and struggles - of those beyond the spotlight by bringing together 20 new voices and new stories.

Surprise
Revisado: 02-20-23
This was a joy to listen to. Each story had its own distinct voice that added to the richness of the overall story. Unlike many collections, the sum was greater than the parts. Kudos to the individual authors and the editors and compilers. Loved it!

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Run Away with the Circus
Revisado: 07-31-20
This is two-sided tale of a man who finds himself working on a circus during the depression. It shows the hardship of the workers as well as the animals. But it also is full of love and kindness for both man and beast. You will be brought to tears as you get to know Walter the tough as nails dwarf with a heart of gold and Rosie the intelligent and very human-like elephant. But it also will open your eyes to the tragedy of getting old and being dismissed as irrelevant. If you don’t cry and rejoice at the end, then you don’t have a heart.
