Historia
Always The Music is the fascinating story of Morris’ personal metamorphosis through the highest levels of the world of classical music, his learning and insights into how storied musical institutions function, great artists create, and audiences engage. Over the course of 34 years running the Boston Symphony and The Cleveland Orchestra, he had the growing realization that American orchestras had become ingrown on themselves, with rigid structures and cultures that conspired to perpetuate those structures rather than the music experiences they were built to create.

His Heart’s in Music
Revisado: 12-31-24
I’ve never met Tom Morris but have lived in Cleveland since 1958 and am a longtime subscriber to the Cleveland Orchestra. Thus I am not an impartial absorber of Tom’s book. It is wonderfully detailed about so many things that are vital to me, including advice that the music world needs to pay attention to, for its health.

Historia
On January 5, 1895, Captain Alfred Dreyfus's cries of innocence were drowned out by a mob shouting "Death to Judas!" In this book, Maurice Samuels gives listeners new insight into Dreyfus himself—the man at the center of the affair. He tells the story of Dreyfus's early life in Paris, his promising career as a French officer, the false accusation leading to his imprisonment on Devil's Island, the fight to prove his innocence that divided the French nation, and his life of quiet obscurity after World War I.

Good but there’s one serious fault
Revisado: 05-08-24
I liked the subject but deplored the pronunciation of French names. Amazing! A book completely about France, read in English, yet the reader isn’t required to know how to pronounce correctly the many French names! How is the listener supposed to know what the reader is talking about? I did a lot of guessing or drawing a blank.

Historia
Julian Jackson uses Petain's three-week trial as a lens through which to examine one of history's great moral dilemmas. Was the policy of collaboration "four years to erase from our history," as the prosecution claimed? Or was it, as conservative politicians insist to this day, a sacrifice that placed pragmatism above moral purity? Jackson blends courtroom drama, political intrigue, and brilliant narrative history to highlight the hard choices and moral compromises leaders make in times of war.

Great book, so detailed
Revisado: 11-29-23
The people come alive through all these details. Lots of viewpoints are expressed and reactions to them. Prevalent viewpoints keep changing — it’s all fascinating. I love France, their history, their language. The reader/performer seems to love all these too. One pronunciation I don’t understand: why pronounce the S on the end of Camus?

Historia
Much has been written about the arrival of artificial intelligence, but according to political philosopher David Runciman, we've been living with AI for 300 years—because states and corporations are robots, too. In this mind-bending work, Runciman explains the modern world through the history of the "artificial agents" we created to rescue us from our all-too-human limitations. The Handover will forever change how we understand the history of the modern world as well as the immense challenges on the horizon.

Food for Thought
Revisado: 11-19-23
David Runciman is supportive, intelligent, ethical — I know this through his podcasts and through an interaction with a particular grad student. It’s true in this book too on a timely important topic, the future of humanity and our world. It’s a hard topic. We need him to be supportive. We also need to face this subject with our eyes wide open.

Historia
In Teaching White Supremacy, Donald Yacovone shows us the clear and damning evidence of white supremacy’s deep-seated roots in our nation’s education system in a fascinating, in-depth examination of America’s wide assortment of texts, from primary readers to college textbooks and other higher-ed course materials. Sifting through a wealth of materials, from the colonial era to today, Yacovone reveals the systematic ways in which white supremacist ideology has infiltrated American culture and how it has been at the heart of our collective national identity.

Frankly, I was appalled at all the brainwashing through so many years and we are probably not done yet. I graduated from high school in 1954 so reached deep into my memories. Also I’m a Tennessean who has lived in Cleveland Ohio since 1958, so I compare North and South with knowledge of both. Thanks for recording. That made it more palatable to endure: sorry example after sorry example. Listeners and readers have pictured here a travesty of living together respectfully. We have to do better.

In 1971, a property speculator named Harley Mann begins recording his life story onto a reel-to-reel machine. Reflecting on his childhood in the early 20th century, Harley recounts that after his father’s sudden death, his family migrated down to Florida’s swamplands—mere miles away from what would become Disney World—to join a community of Shakers.

Rewarding tale!
Revisado: 12-12-22
This book was fascinating! I lived in Shaker Heights 1959-2017 and now live only a couple of miles away, in Cleveland. Shaker Heights has the Shaker Historical Society, of which I am a longtime member. My heart is still in Shaker Heights, so I can say we are proud of our Shaker heritage, presented so graphically in a Florida setting by author Russell Banks. Shakers had virtues and vices, including shunning, according to Mr. Banks. I never heard of our North Union Shakers doing shunning, but maybe the record is suppressed. Shaker Heights is very different from the Shakers. They wouldn’t approve of us. I also know Florida, but not the way I know local Shaker history, and I’ve never been tempted to visit Disney’s Florida establishment. Mr. Banks, thank you for this book!

Historia
Since the 16th century we have been fascinated by Henry VIII and the man who stood beside him, guiding him, enriching him, and enduring the king's insatiable appetites and violent outbursts until Henry ordered his beheading in July 1540. After a decade of sleuthing in the royal archives, Diarmaid MacCulloch has emerged with a tantalizing new understanding of Henry's mercurial chief minister, the inscrutable and utterly compelling Thomas Cromwell.

I loved all the detail. I loved the author’s care for historical exactitude and for his subject, Thomas Cromwell. I love the book’s dedication to GR Elton, a Cambridge historian I greatly admire. Listening has been a great experience. I’ve been in the England of 500 years ago. Now back to the present now, perhaps with some enlightenment.

The Cold War was not just a contest of power. It was also about ideas, in the broadest sense - economic and political, artistic and personal. In The Free World, the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar and critic Louis Menand tells the story of American culture in the pivotal years from the end of World War II to Vietnam and shows how changing economic, technological, and social forces put their mark on creations of the mind.

I listened twice! It’s a long book, and parts I’m not interested in at all, even second time through. Many other parts are enlightening, like Black Mountain College, the New Criticism, “I Take My Stand,” Kenyon and Sewanee, Black writers, many more. Mr. Menand has a great mind, a broad mind, an expansive mind; and exploring this book was very much worth doing. I also bought a hard copy to refer to because I HATE murdered French pronunciation. That’s my criticism of the performer: his French.

Historia
John C. Calhoun is among the most notorious and enigmatic figures in American political history. First elected to Congress in 1810, Calhoun went on to serve as secretary of war and vice president. But he is perhaps most known for arguing in favor of slavery as a "positive good" and for his famous doctrine of "state interposition", which laid the groundwork for the South to secede from the Union - and arguably set the nation on course for civil war. The strain of radical politics he developed has found expression once again in the tactics and extremism of the modern Far Right.

I’m trying to give it five stars in all categories but phone not cooperating. I got this book because of review in The Economist. Otherwise never would have touched it. Dislike his ideas and his effect on US and our history. But he’s a complex man. And the reading was good too, straightforward, fitting to the subject and my tastes.

Historia
In his retirement, Thomas Jefferson edited the New Testament with a penknife and glue, removing all mention of miracles and other supernatural events. Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment, Jefferson hoped to reconcile Christian tradition with reason by presenting Jesus of Nazareth as a great moral teacher - not a divine one. Peter Manseau tells the story of the Jefferson Bible, exploring how each new generation has reimagined the book in its own image as listeners grapple with both the legacy of the man who made it and the place of religion in American life.

Revisado: 04-26-21
I knew about Jefferson Bible already and thought Jefferson was misguided to create it. I got this book because of a review. The review didn’t mislead but gave me something to check out. I have done so. Performance: I didn’t care for different voices and accents used for different writers through the years. Too fussy an approach, too precious (do you understand that word here?). You’ll never print this.
