Historia
The Devil Came on Horseback is an intense, vivid autobiographical report from the heart of violent Darfur and a call to action by a former American Marine who became a military observer for the African Union. The first extensive on-the-ground account of the genocide in Sudan, it leads us through the tragic impact of an Arab government bent on destroying its black African citizens and the frustrating complexity of international inaction.

A parade of horrors
Revisado: 08-23-21
If you are looking for an account of atrocities in Sudan, this book will deliver. Much of the author’s account is gut wrenching and maddening. However, his micro view of suffering offers little to make sense of the conflict in Darfur besides baring witness. Steidle spends six months taking pictures and wringing his hands in rage, unable to comprehend the west’s apathy. Perhaps more analysis and less indignation would have made this a more compelling and useful account.
I did not care for the narrator, who did nothing to improve the shallow and smug first person tone.

Historia
Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."

Interesting, relevant
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is a low key topic (unless you are a culinary historian by trade) but offers a fascinating look at society’s evolution through food. Fun to listen to and informative, and the lecture format is casual and straightforward.
