From the best-selling author of Deacon King Kong (an Oprah Book Club pick) and The Color of Water comes the story of a young boy born a slave who joins John Brown’s antislavery crusade - and who must pass as a girl to survive. Henry Shackleford is a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1856 - a battleground between anti - and pro-slavery forces - when legendary abolitionist John Brown arrives. When an argument between Brown and Henry's master turns violent, Henry is forced to leave town.

Historia
Detective Jane Harper can't shake the image of the young woman discovered in a field - eyes closed, a crown of woven vines on her head. She expects macabre murders like this in her native San Francisco, not here. Jane and her partner, Stu, vow to catch the killer, but in this town, that's easier said than done. The police department is in the grips of a wide-reaching scandal that could topple the entire force, and Jane and Stu face a series of dead ends. Until they meet Ida Lane.

Base book, base people, waste of time
Revisado: 05-17-17
Listened to this book while vacationing in Africa. The crime/mystery portion of the story is probably acceptable, but the love story portion is silly. Loser people acting out a slasher story. The book was free for Prime members.
Advice - don't waste your time on this book.

Historia
The year is 1869. A brutal triple murder in a remote community in the Scottish highlands leads to the arrest of a young man by the name of Roderick Macrae. A memoir written by the accused makes it clear that he is guilty, but it falls to the country's finest legal and psychiatric minds to uncover what drove him to commit such merciless acts of violence. Was he mad? Only the persuasive powers of his advocate stand between Macrae and the gallows.

Scottish Murder - study of mind & culture
Revisado: 01-14-17
Quite liked the story. Found the cultural examination of Scotland life interesting, as well as the historical perpective of Scotland's parallel societies, and what life was like among the "have nots". Well worth your time.

Beautiful story, artfully read.

I learned of the book from the Wall Street Journal, which named the book as one of 2016's best books. I like historical fiction, when done well. Enjoyed the book very much and would recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII, trying to understand the hate, love, sadness, multicultural attitudes, and trials that existed during that time period.

Historia
An old man lies dying. Confined to bed in his living room, he sees the walls around him begin to collapse, the windows come loose from their sashes, and the ceiling plaster fall off in great chunks, showering him with a lifetime of debris: newspaper clippings, old photographs, wool jackets, rusty tools, and the mangled brass works of antique clocks. Soon, the clouds from the sky above plummet down on top of him, followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating.

Ugh - simple plot beautifully written
Revisado: 07-11-15
Tried to finish the book, got bored, and decided to listen to it on Audible instead. Great book for those wanting a book with a remedial plot, but written well with very descriptive language. I would pass on this one - glad it's over.

Historia
Travis Coates has a good head…on someone else’s shoulders. A touching, hilarious, and wholly original coming-of-age story from John Corey Whaley, author of the Printz and Morris Award-winning Where Things Come Back. Listen - Travis Coates was alive once and then he wasn’t. Now he’s alive again. Simple as that. The in-between part is still a little fuzzy, but Travis can tell you that, at some point or another, his head got chopped off and shoved into a freezer in Denver, Colorado. Five years later, it was reattached to some other guy’s body, and well, here he is.

the ending was beautifully simplistic, with a topic that is extremely difficult for us, life and death.

Loved It

Great book. Some adult themes - beware if you plan to listen or read to your child, as you will need to explain some sexual items. Funny and very well written.
